What do the check marks on the top right of dino dossier icons mean?

No check mark mean you have not tamed the creature before, a check mark means you have tamed it before.

What if you collect a Dossier, but it still remains "locked?" The one I'm having trouble with is the Otter dossier. I collected it, and even tamed one, and yet it still has that "lock" graphic on top of the dossier icon.

Then how come I have tamed a Bronto and Meg and they are still unchecked?

Recently I wondered too why I had no check mark for species I tamed. I made some tests, and I found the answer :

You need to be near the dino when the taming is complete. That is, you need to see the popup window asking you to name your new tame. If you leave the dino during the taming process, and you only come back later after the taming has finished, you won't get the check mark.

The last post in a thread from 2019 at:

Can anyone agree or disagree with the assessment of the lock icon?

There used to be tons more marks on the dossiers. I found an old post from 2015 - that shows an OLD picture from the dossiers and them trying to figure out all the marking. This may or may not be useful today. I just mentioned it because we can realize we have it easy with today's dossiers.

I agree with Elgar. Another possibility of the OP not getting the checkmark is that the OP was probably using the [cheat forcetame] command, when he (or she) should have been taming them the proper way.
Either proper tame, or use the [cheat gmsummon] command.

I do not force tame
