Recently I wondered too why I had no check mark for species I tamed. I made some tests, and I found the answer :
You need to be near the dino when the taming is complete. That is, you need to see the popup window asking you to name your new tame. If you leave the dino during the taming process, and you only come back later after the taming has finished, you won't get the check mark.
The last post in a thread from 2019 at:
https://survivetheark.com/index.php?/forums/topic/402255-dossier-and-notes/ says:
'The check on the Dossiers means you have tamed that creature, and the lock icon behind the note meaning another one of your characters has unlocked that note, not the one you are currently playing as. '
Can anyone agree or disagree with the assessment of the lock icon?
There used to be tons more marks on the dossiers. I found an old post from 2015 - that shows an OLD picture from the dossiers and them trying to figure out all the marking. This may or may not be useful today. I just mentioned it because we can realize we have it easy with today's dossiers.

The last post in the thread is hilarious -- looks like he got the last word.
Either proper tame, or use the [cheat gmsummon] command.
