Feeling lost / need guideance
Noob here, I've only a few dozen hours in the game and only played solo so far. I've restarted my game three times now, changing the settings and adding mods, but I noticed each time I restarted around the same time and this time again: I'm feeling lost and unsure what to do.

The start is pretty straight forward: You gather resources, level up and unlock new engrams. Then I try to build those new engrams to get access to better tools/dinos/structures. But there comes a point, where I stop using up all my engram points each level, and where I'll still unlock more engrams than I can actually build. I've unlocked the fabricator, pump-action shotgun, etc. But I need oil, polymeres, electronics and other high-tech resources that I don't have access to, as I'm running around on Herbivore island.

I've tried to venture forth onto the main island of the map "the island", but every time, I feel so woefully under-prepared.

I've tamed two Paras, a Pteranodon, two Trikes and a Brontosaurus, but they are on Herbivore island. I have a simple pistol and a simple shotgun with a few dozen ammo for each, but I still mainly use my crossbow, keeping the guns for emergency situations only.

I'd very much appreciate some guidance from you guys:
* Share some guides/walkthroughs
* Give me missions to complete
* Tell me what I need to do next
* Give me tips on how to survive my forays to the main island (and what to actually do there?)
* Anything else?

PS. I've tried joining online games, but naturally, they are all pretty evolved already and arriving at a location that already has a massive, high-tech base with all the tamed creatures only increases my feeling of being lost. I furthermore hate using voice chat and am not that hardcore of a player, so online play is generally not for me, but I'm willing to listen to suggestions if you guys really think going online is the way forward to help me overcome this bump.

I understand what you're saying. I know the feeling.
Here's what I usually do:
Tame, Tame and Tame some more.

Get some raptors! Or a Carno or a Rex!
You're feeling ''woefully under-prepared'' because you have nothing to watch your back.
Get some fighters. Or better yet, start breeding an army!

As for missions to complete,
look up some cave locations and try to do those.
However If you're not feeling prepared to even start exploring I would not recommend caves. Because they can be quite hard.

Your end goal is completing the caves, collecting the artifacts and fighting the bosses.
But you're not up for that yet.

Right now, collect, tame, build, farm, explore, breed and make.
Get settled and battle ready.

Try to get off herbivore island, build yourself a small base on the southern beaches with an enclosure around it (Dino's only aggro on enclosures when you are in range of their aggro, so if the enclosure is wide enough that will be your safe space).
Next you need yourself a battle tame: make bola's, harvest some meat and tame a raptor. (or multiple dilo's that would follow you around, works as well)
You said you have a pteranodon, craft the saddle, craft some armor and go exploring. (Watch the stamina!! always land before it runs out). Go towards redwood (fly above the tree's as much as possible) and find the mountain there, make yourself an outpost and farm metal.

I think these are already some basic things you can do for now.

EDIT: Dino's do the work, harvesting, combat, transport. Whatever it is its always a dino thats best at it.

Thanks guys!
These concrete suggestions are what I need! To give me direction in what my next steps should be.

Should I tame any specific type of raptor? Or will any do? And how many are "some/a few)? Three? Six? Ten?

If you can get your hands on 4 high level raptors you can deal with most threats. However the more the better.

Once you can protect yourself, the next taming place should be the red forest. Where all the huge trees are.

Get a thylacoleo or a direbear. Great for getting around but also good fighters. The red forest can be dangerous so take care of protection first.

Honestly if you get a high level thyla, you're set. you'll destroy everything (except giga's). Breed a good thyla and then its even better
