Might want to play on a unofficial server with a bit higher rates so you can recover more easily if you get raided. Aswell as joining a tribe so you can learn from them, best would be a tribe that just started or is a bit in the game.
Using vanilla settings when you're solo is quite hard.
Also official servers are a hellscape you should stay away from.
You're probably more suited to play unofficial pvp servers with solo friendly considerations OR pvpve servers with set rules of how/when pvp occurs.
This is actually a very accurate description. And pretty much sums up my experience with official servers.
Should you want to know more, hit me up :)
Now you can actually compete. Being single player, find a rat hole, build a turret wall, go grief other tribes. At best you'll be able to raid other ratholes, large bases will be next to impossible alone but you can still annoy the hell out of them tame sniping or los rocketing hatchframes to the point that it entices a larger tribe to raid them. Or just solo 1v1 PvP. Just keep in mind even on small tribes you'll be at a disadvantage solo and will always be limited in what you'll be able to do.
Also being solo you might get picked up by another tribe.
