When starting a game, and you get all those options with sliders, go to the advanced tab and scroll down to the day/night settings, enter a value for the night that suits you. Its basically a percentage of how fast it goes, so 2.0 would make it twice as fast, 0.5 would make it twice as long, etc.
You can also adjust the overall passage of time speed, so if you did that, take that into account as well.
Once you get further in the game, you'll have more to do even if you stay in your home base at night rather than use the gamma settings to make the night more visible. I personally feel that using gamma so I can "see" at night is too much like cheating, but I still keep really busy with cooking, gardening, crafting, etc. until the sun starts to come back up.
Day Cycle Speed to 0.5
Daytime Speed to 0.3
Night time Speed to 2.5
works good for me. Just test...
Additional, you may find useful a presentation of two MODs, a Dino Finder and a tool to Reveal the Map (activate English subtitles):

Each person has there own way they like to play. =)
Of course, I wasn't disrespecting anyone who uses gamma, just saying for me personally, I like the nights to be darker. It makes the surrounding jungle scarier. haha
I did speed them up to be about 1.5 times faster than daytime, but for me, I don't consider that cheaty at all....it's simply to make up for the fact that the game doesn't give me an option to just sleep through a large part of the night...which is what I would do if the game were real life
