Artifact location depends on which map you're playing. On the island they're all in caves of one sort or another. And yes to the second part. The items/artifacts open a portal into a boss arena, green is easiest, then blue then red. Even the easiest, green broodmother, can take multiple high level fighters and/or 20 battle bred dino's. They are endgame battles. At your point, don't worry about them, focus on leveling yourself and the best dino's you can tame, then breeding those best dino's to give yourself a fighting chance.

Even then, expect to lose everything you take into that portal the first time or two, unless you want to follow a step by step guide which are definately available, but take away a bit of the fun in my opinion.

You have lots of time to get ready for that. You can't even do the boss fight until you're a certain level, and even then it's not recommended until later. Watch youtubes about the boss fights. I recommend phlinger Phoo.

Breeding two dinos results in offspring stronger than the parents. Start with max level for your server, 120, 150, etc, breed them, then breed the offspring, (there is no inbreeding mechanic), continue that for a few generations and you can end up with creatures drastically stronger then anything you could find in the wild.

You will need to breed high level Rex's until you get 20 of them with lots of health and melee. We are talking 25000+ health each and 600+melee each. You have a lot of work cut out for you.

Thats a good early game starting point, but the entire group would die in about 45 seconds against even a green broodmother. As you explore, use your spyglass and keep an eye out for rexes, megatheriums, a yuyutrannus and a daeodon, level 120 or higher. Tame them with kibble, as the bonus levels from high efficency tame really do stack up, and as the above said, 20 max level tamed, leveled up, then bred are your long term target.

Megatheriums are best for broodmother, as they get a massive damage boost against insects, rexes for the next two.

Really, dont worry about artifacts and boss fights for now. There isn't a huge amount of reward for them anyways. My almost 2,000 hours have been spent exploring and building almost exclusively. As you're doing other things, just get in the habit of spyglassing rexes and megas when you see them, and have a good stack of tranq darts and narco paste ready to go.

Since each map does have a spawn limit, if you're feeling brave, eliminate any non triple digit rexes you find, so that something stronger can spawn.
