Steam has benefits like their own server search to make it easier to find a server that may not be listed within the game list. Since Ark has stated their list has a maximum capacity. No clue why.
Steam is much more robust in terms of AOL features that many Steam users like to gripe at Epic about. Since Epic was originally meant to be a shop to sell and deploy games and patch services with minimal bare bones features. This was their intention from the start. Therefore, only intended to improve their actual shopping experience for the store. Only after numerous complaints from Steam users, did they start to work on more AOL features. (Personally, aside from improved shopping which has actually been improving, I don't think they even should have started working on AOL features. And kept it as minimum as possible.)
Steam also offers a workshop with mod support for user-made modifications to games. I actually also categorize this as an AOL feature since it isn't necessary for a shop that is meant for shopping and basic game servicing. So it's something that can be handled by a third party. However, it is a good feature. I personally don't care about mods. Quite a few games I play on Steam have lots of mod support. Either I don't use the mods at all. Or I'll use some bare minimum ones that offer some basic useful QOL. But for the most part, I don't consider this necessary.
Epic right now is having an enormous sale, and giving everybody a $10 coupon off of any minimum purchase over $15. Ark itself is $9.99 (usd). But I'd recommend getting the Explorer Edition which includes the first three expansions. It will be $12.49 (usd) with that coupon. Also, avoid Genesis. I just personally don't recommend playing Genesis. Ever.
For example, me and my friends got Ark a few weeks ago for free on Epic. Then when this sale came in, we bought the bundle for the three expansions. I setup a dedicated server, and we've been having lots of fun with it. Even yesterday, my friend was trying to tame a unicorn, and got it killed.
Epic has been giving regular updates about their mod workshop. So it will be up in due time.
In conclusion, the server search benefit for Steam doesn't really mean much. If you really want to get into mods, and don't want to wait for Epic which could be tomorrow or months down the line, I'd say settle for Steam. But it's not on sale here right now. So I really wouldn't say the benefit of mods isn't even really worth it in comparison to Epic on sale. So Epic for the sale either way, I think is the best choice.
The only crossplay I'm certain of is getting Ark from Windows 10 ability to crossplay with Xbox. I don't know of any crossplay with PS4 and PC.
