Just use ark server manager. Makes this kinda stuff much easier.

I have had updates that failed but was still able to play, and I've also been unable to play even though it was up to date. The only real trick I've used is to start and restart and restart again and eventually something changes.

I believe one source of confusion is that servers use one update number, the client uses another, and there might even be another number involved. All three of my servers show completely different numbers but are all reporting no updates available. They are three different Maps though.

I'm in no way an expert at this, but I've used ASM before and will see if I can help, though I won't guarantee it will work. I have some ideas though:

Press the green check mark next to the 'Upgrade/Verify' button and if a message pops up telling anything other than the server has passed the basic validation, copy paste that message here. This could tell us what is wrong.

If you have mods (I'm going to assume you do based off of the error that talks about the mods), try removing all of them and then adding them back in one at a time, updating after each time. I am wondering whether some of your selected mods are problematic, like maybe one of them is incompatible with another. If this works, great. If not, go on to the next idea.

Uninstall it completely from your system. Then reinstall it and see if that made an improvement. This worked for me just today actually, but with a different issue. I would try to launch the program, not the server, the program, and it simply wouldn't. So I uninstalled and reinstalled and it worked.

BTW, should you have problems with actually launching and joining your server, I have some tips for that too that I know from experience work.

Hope this helped. If not, sorry I couldn't be of more value to solving your problem. Again, I'm not an expert, just some guy trying to help as best he can.

Updating through ASM has almost always worked fine for me. When it doesn't work, I usually try again a bit later and it goes through fine.

If all else fails, I'd copy the installation folder to a new location and make a new profile in ASM (pointing to that new location).

As a last option, you could back up the server files, uninstall everything and reinstall from scratch. Seems like a lot of work to solve what should be a simple problem though.

Just had the same thing, found out an ark Server needs about 13gb of free disk space. Removing old servers and freeing up more than enough space allowed me to get past the error message and start the download/update. Apperently there is not "out of space" error message to handle this so it just crashes. Hope this helps ;)

In my case I didn't have enough disk space, when I freed up 10GB space it worked perfectly.
Veeshan Oct 17, 2023 @ 6:00am
And this disk space issue is generalized. It's good practice to leave X% free at all times. I get nervous with only 50gb free nowadays.

Oh noes this is somehow irrelevant because time exists!

don't use anon steamkey access to update many mods in a server.

Just recently my Ark server manager started giving me a message about some sort of steam key. I have no idea what that is, am I somehow automatically using an anonymous steam key because it can't find whatever one it had before?

You're logging into steamcmd anonymously. Use an actual steam account.
