How do I choose to install the windows version of Linux and run with Steam Play as opposed to installing the Linux version? TIA for any help.
Make sure 'Enable Steam Play for supported titles' is ticked in Settings > Steam Play.
Then, right click Ark (for example) in your games list > properties > Bottom of 'General' tab, click 'Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool' and choose a Proton version.
I should add it wasn't easy to find this information - had to crawl through quite a lot of posted issues on steamlinux & Proton's Github pages about a month ago. The option should be more obvious such as a dropdown arrow near the download button. However, someone on Github suggested having the Windows version of native Linux games easily downloadable on Linux may discourage developers from fixing the native Linux versions of their games...
I have Ubuntu 18.04 with 8 in RAM and a GTX 745 with 2GB.
So far I have tried:
- Reinstalling/uninstalling ark
- Reinstalling/uninstalling all proton versions
- Checking integrity for both ark and proton versions
- Wiping all my HDDs clean, then doing the above again
- Changing drivers and proton versions
Nothings worked, only the really bad linux edition boots up.
EDIT: Found some potentially relevant information if anyone is interested, https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3218
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1
I am on an older machine with a slightly more modern nVidia graphics card, running Ubuntu 22.04. I used Proton Experimental.
