Yes, one of you will have to host a game and the other can join. You can either play non dedicated (Not recommended, due to guests being tethered to the host) or host a "dedicated" server from your PC (That's what I do) that you can bring up whenever you want to play and take down when you are done playing.
Non dedicated is single player with a friend. That one can only be played while the host is playing.
I use Ark server manager (ASM) to host (There are quite a few video tutorials about it on youtube). When hosting a dedicated server, you will be joining it just like any other server. Just that you are hosting it. So, I'd recommend using a password to enter, so unwanted players can't join.
You can also log out of the server and others will keep playing, as long as you keep the server running in your PC (Watch a tut, you'll know what I mean).
You CAN make a copy of your single player save and bring it into your server (I did, since we started playing non dedicated), but it will be that, a copy. Though everything will be just as you had it, even your character. Once you are done playing online, if you want to continue that save in single player, you can copy and paste your server save into your single player world and continue, but it will have to be done manually.
