Using A VPN To Bypass Closed Router To Connect To ASM?
I am unable to connect to an ASM server through my home router because the internet is managed by the apartment complex where I live and they apparently want the router to be essentially closed. I am unable to port forward and the internet company themselves will not do it for me.

A couple weeks ago IPVanish started a good deal on their VPN service. It included 250 GB of cloud storage which has allowed me to setup Ark and Conan to auto-update the saved files allowing me to play on my singleplayer saves both at work and at home and continue where I left off on either device. That alone is worth the deal I got.

However, I would like to setup an ASM server so that my girlfriend and I can play on one of the ARK maps together while I am at work (I'm an EMT and do get down time).

Would connecting to a VPN server allow me to run the ASM server from my computer and I would be able to connect to it from my work?

Forgive the rough explanation I'm about to do.

A virtual private network allows you to connect to a server which then you browse the internet through it instead of within your network. A server communicating to the internet through a vpn should be connectable to as long as it is set up properly to your local computer. Here is a huge FAQ on ark server management that has a section pertaining to this.

In theory Yes. If your VPN server was at home, and your VPN client at work connected to it you would then be able to browse your home LAN network as though you were physically connected to it.

However, setting up a VPN at home would likely require you to do port forwarding, which you've already stated isn't possible.

Now you could use an ad-hoc VPN-ish type service like "Hamachi". Installed to both your Ark server and remote client you want to connect from. This would create a virtual mesh network between each of the devices and they'd then talk as though they were on the same LAN.

You would then from work connect over the hamchi network using the hamachi IP address of your Ark server. Whilst at home the normal LAN address would be fine.

Problems with this approach... Most likely won't appear in the ark server list. Will need to manually add to the favourites using the steam server browser. IP:Port.

If you have multiple servers and try to do a server transfer, the transfer list is based on the publicly visible servers list. So you will likely not see your servers. You could have a character per server, but transferring between them might be a PITA.

So yeh you could hack something together but there are cons to doing so.

Connecting the OP's Ark Server to a VPN server off their network I can't imagine how that'd work.
It requires you to have reserved listening ports for the server. Why the port forwarding is required.

For that to work on an external VPN service would require said service to reserve those ports just for you, and route them back down your connection to the Ark server. Given the VPN server is likely used by thousands of people I highly doubt that is something they would do.

I took a gander at the link you posted and can't find references to VPN.

Not exactly what I was hoping to hear.

This managed internet has become a problem in more than just this. Now that Xbox has an app which allows you to continue playing your games from your console via streaming, I thought I would be able to do that as well. That is also a no go as my NAT is on strict and it will not allow me to connect to my Xbox through the app.

Really wish I wasn't forced into having it. Once we resigned the lease, it was required to have and pay for through the rent.

I could get my own internet, but then I would be paying over $100 for internet and right now that's not an option.

See if you can get a public IP address added to your managed internet and routed through to your router. If that is possible... You can then do port forwarding as though it were a normal connection.

I called and asked and they said no.

The reason I was given is because someone can hack through the game with ports open. I called BS, but the tech wasn't amused.

They are an internet service not a managed IT company. It's none of his business what happens on your network and if they do their job properly, what happens on your network stays on your network.

Can you change internet company? Otherwise talk to whatever consumer watchdog/ombudsman that is appropriate to you.

Unfortunately, no. They are the only internet company that runs to these apartments.

I'm not sure what is in this area for a consumer watchdog or ombudsman. I think by the time anything was done about it anyway, I think I am the only one complaining, we will hopefully be out of here.
