Nope. Your mistaken impression may be based on the fact that it was attempted at one point, but has long since been abandoned is my understanding, not having VR personally.

Turn on low memory mode in the pop up menu when launching from steam.

Launch Game and load into world, i have played in VR on the Island and Extinction map. once the music stops and meshes have loaded in, go to options. Turn settings to low and slide resolution and textures all the way left. click apply and save. then put VR hmd on and click the enable VR hmd. It will say left click or press A button. once you left click you can change everything back to epic or high and slide resolution sliders to the right. the mouse pointer and in game cursor are not at the same spot so if you pick axe or shoot they will be off from point of impact. For me, i have Oculus Rift and if i take it off and the little forehead sensor goes yellow the monitor screen will go back into 2D windowed. if you try to click VR hmd again it will give the crash message.

i never saw [FIX] to this question. everybody else has problems to about crashes why don't we as a community find fixes instead of relying on wildcard. Nerd parade did it with the undermeshing. Solve the problems not wait for some company to solve them for you.

not as much of a necro as some posts from 2015 that get resurrected from time to time, besides, it's useful information, therefore necro is acceptable.

As an added note it depends on your graphics card, which is a duh. a 3GB 1060 will run out of memory and crash unless you're in low memory mode to begin with, a 8gb RX 580 from AMD will run the game in normal mode, just tweak the settings to get decent FPS. All on an occulus rift.
