DLC Question
So how do the DLC's work. Are the maps combined? Are the DLC Dinos on every map? Items? Halp.

No. The dinos for that map are only on those maps (aka no SE dinos roaming around in Island). There is an SE dino on ragnarok, but that still counts as DLC so no.

And in the items case, you must play through every single map on the same survivor in order to unlock those items.

Hope this helps!

Ok, let's say I get all the DLC's, are the maps connected and are there DLC dinos on other maps.

not seamlessly connected, but you can travel between them

I don't know what you mean by "are they connected". Can you explain what you mean by that?

But yes, there are DLC dinos on other maps. Some Scorched Earth dinosaurs are on Ragnarok and Extinction, some Abberation dinos are on Extinction, etc. But not all DLC dinos are in every map. Velonasaurs, snow owls, and all the other new Extinction dinos (since it's the most recent map) will not be on SE and Abb, Abberation creatures such as the reaper king and queen and nameless will not be found on SE because it's more recent.

Is SP, yes you can travel (character, dino, items) between map.

Official servers, yes. There are in some small clusters and the big PvE and PvP networks. (Not recommended, very cancerous)

For unofficial servers, it depends on the community. Some are 1 or 2 maps, some are all official maps plus modded maps. These can be so much better than official servers.

Look if you are looking to buy a DLC:
Don´t buy Scorched Earth the only difference within ragnarok (apart from being free) is the Phoenix which... isn´t too easy to find.

Now Aberration is for rock drakes, reapers, that thingy queen, light and energy stuff, one of the most difficult maps, I say its not worth playing in it, and using it only as a map for shelter or as a hidding server in officials, I bought it on console but just for getting the new creatures into the island and other maps. (also there´s no fliers allowed here).

Extinction, I recommend waiting till it gets fixed, better, balanced, but for now I m excited to play this game on PC(imma buy it again on winter sales with one paid dlc), and also tame the new creatures and transfer them out.

Conclusion: Just don´t buy Scorched Earth.

While buying the DLCs you dont pay for items or dinos, those are all available on vanilla game via mods/console commands (as soon as the devkit is updated this is true for the new Extinction DLC aswell), you only play for the maps, which progress lorewise:
The Island -> Scorched Earth -> Aberration -> Extinction

For unlocking Items basically its true that there is above stated progression, like for example the Tek Railgun would normally unlocked via the Bossfight on Aberration only (as said those can be worked around through console commands/mods)...

Ragnarok is a bad example here i'd say, since 1) not a paid DLC but a free map, 2) not a story map (so outside of above mentioned progression) and 3) initially made by modders so doesnt exactly follow the rules of the Storyarks (as in Dino-access and -level for example)...
oh, and there are all SE Dinos on Ragna besides Phoenix AFAIK!

So if new to ARK i suggest playing around the base game abit to get a feeling if you really want to add ontop with DLC Maps...

EDIT: Whoa, ninja'd par excellence!

I like SE... Just because the heat spikes and the new difficulty of survival. Nobody else I know likes it, so it's probably just me, but it depends whether you like a challenge that you'll probably die a lot in, or a slow-paced adventure. *shrug* I'm more for the challenge, because there's a lot more to do.

Abberation IS pretty hard... But I would say it's worth playing. I just love how the cave looks, the abberant creatures, and the way that the surface is completely unbearable. The rock drakes are pretty cool. And "that queen thingy" is a Reaper Queen, so reapers and "that queen thingy" are the same.

Extinction I've seen a lot of bugs, but that's just part of the newly released map stuff. I haven't played it a lot, but I love how it's like an abandoned city. And the new creatures are pretty cool in my opinion.

I'd say buying the season pass is your best bet. You can play the different maps as you'd like, maybe take a break from SE if it gets too challenging, etc. But that's just my opinion, not a fact. So do what you think is best, and only get advice from other players if you need to know the concept.

Good point with ragnarok. I just didn't really think about it, I was trying to get so much onto my laptop at once.

Thanks everyone, also what I meant by connected was, the maps are connected like there is a Scorched Earth area and an Abberation area. I was watching an Extinction video and he spawned in and said "Oh look, over there is the Scorched Earth area." So I got confused.

Oh he just means it looks like SE, not that it is SE. The maps themselves are not all in the same massive map.

Ok awesome! Thanks.

No, you completly change maps via "crossserver-travel", like transfering your character onto another map... what people refer to here is more like "Scorched Earth-looking Area", not like "you need that DLC to unlock that desert part of the map"

Edit: damn, me too slow today :deadfox:

I would say... if you want to experience ark progression as intended by WC... then get all WC dlc... and not Rag or Center Map.

SE does get left behind bevause of Rag.... but if you play it for the first time after doing theIsland... without ruining things by playing Rag 1st.... The SE experience is enjoyable... challenging... and by the time you leave... you'll be truly ready for Aberration/Extinction.

If game lore progression is secondary to you.... just play any map in whatever order you want.
