This is all I had to do to create a working cluster.

Is it a necessity to tick this box?
when on the rental and can do the transfer to it. However when I get to the home server from the rental it asks me to create a new survivor.
I have transfers and downloads enabled on both. Any suggestions on what I might be missing?
Has nothing to do with the transferring of data itself.
That is what the cluster directory override we were discussing above comes in. It's a shared folder on the same device that all server instances put their transfer data in.
If they are not on the same server... Well then you as an admin have to come up with some automated method to sync changes to that folder between the various different devices your server instances are running on.
Talk to your paid server host to see what methods of file transfer they support.
So if I understand correctly unless both servers in the cluster are on the same PC/Server machine it is not possible? My rented ARK server is with Survival Servers and I was looking at some of the config options.
There is a setting "No Transfer From Filtering" enabled on the rental and I thought maybe if I turned that off it would work but no.
If I set a folder directory in ASM for the "Alternate Save Directory Name" could that help or do the saves have to be on the same host?
I have never messed with clustered servers before and trying to understand how it works.
Were they on the same device, thats easy... Simply point them to the same folder. Otherwise YOU need to figure out how to get physically separate devices in sync some how. Be that some special sync software, scripting, etc. etc.
That just allows transfers to occur from outside the server. Normally only useful for non-clustered servers. But allows people to transfer stuff from their SP or own servers. Cheated items and dinos included lol.
That's only your world fiiles. What the server saves its own data into.
Nothing to do with the cluster transfers. Mine and others earlier comments already told you what needs to be done. Cluster directory override.
I think you're over complicating this in your head.
Example
Server 1 C:\servers\Island\my saves
Server 2 C:\servers\Extinction\mysaves
Cluster directory C:\servers\obelisktransfers
Both servers must point to the exact same cluster directory override. They both read/write from the same folder and that is NOT the same as their save location.
Your third party server is obviously on some random device in the cloud and you need to talk to them to figure out how to get your remote folder, and local cluster directory overrides in sync.
