Just tamed a wild 1060 Quetzal with worse stats than my lvl 250...what have we done wrong?
Hiya :)

Today i spent 9 hours sat by a lvl 1060 quetzal to tame it, get it back to base and see that it has 8k health...24k less than my 250 started with.

We're playing a private dedicated server with Valguerro and the dino level slider set to 1200 is all I know from the admin.

Is there any known bug or common mistake we might have made to get it to bugger up like this?

I can use the super spyglass and see that my 250 started with higher stats in everything except food, the 1060 lvl guy has 257 - stats nowhere near add up to 1060, let alone the 1500+ he tamed at. For example its 44+2 health on the 257 and 10+2 on the big guy.

Hoping it's an obvious mistake we can fix easily, admin is back on later so i can get more info.

After 255 wild lvl in a stat the points will reset. Like when a creature gets its 256 point into a stat IT gets back to 1.

So having 1200 dinos is utterly pointless?

Yes

What would you reckon is the highest reasonable level to set them to?

My server has a max wild level of 300 (390 for Wyverns and Drakes). It makes it "challenging" enough when fighting wild dinos with your tames, and with a x4 taming setting, it makes taming higher level dinos NOT feel like a chore, but still needs you to work at it with resources and stuff.

Of course, it's all a question of balance. Some feel putting wild max level to insane #'s makes it harder, but as Lord Gwyn said, it's... just pointless and unnecessary bloated difficulty. If he had wanted to make wild dinos harder, there's ways to set their wild stats to get them to be OP, while yours are feeble pleb dinos and yet keep wild max levels to a reasonable number.

Honestly I can't think of any reason to go much above the official levels.
Only difference is a slightly higher difficulty when you start out, but as soon as you tame some stuff they get even higher and just makes the game easier again.
Ofc if that's owners liking, that's up to him in the end.

You have 7 stats and each can be 255 wild and 255 exp giving you a max cap of 2040. Since taming is purely wild levels, your max post tame level will be 1020 before a stat will reset. Since you get up to 50% extra wild levels post tame you have to set it 33% lower than that max at a minimum. With RNG though, setting it to ~715 there is still a good chance for a stat to be given a disproportionate amount of levels post tame. So you want to give a bit of buffer.

Personally based on what I've seen with taming I wouldnt go past 600 wild level and tame out to 899 perfectly. With that info though your server owner can make their own decision if they want to make it a bit higher or lower.

If it no longer gets points after lvl 256, then using dododex and having taming at default x1, max level should be lvl 174, with a perfect tamed rex landing at exactly lvl 256 with 37 kibble...so really it would be best to have the max lvl at 170-180...if anything having the max level over 1,000 makes it easy to get "max" tames because anything over lvl 256 could be tamed with literally 0% taming efficiency and still be maxed when it comes to stat points...I am going to assume this is also why max level on official servers is lvl 150, because tek dinos/wyverns will then be lvl 180, anything over that would be pointless and easier to get max tames

They are not talking about 256 *levels*

They are refering to the amount of points added to a single stat.

If you put 256 points into a stat... it will zero out after the next server reboot.... but your tame wont lose levels... rendering it useless

Oh, I didnt know that...so if you go above say 256 health points, it drops down to a 0 for that stat? What if it is at 256 health points but only 255 dmg points, would that mean both gets dropped down to zero? Or only the health stat?

Only the stat that is over the cap.
And if it tames at 255, you can then level points into it or going any higher would zero it out as well? Thanks for the info btw, did not know this

If 255, nope (have been told, haven't tried) but if you stop at 254 you can.

Its a hard cap.... go over it and it breaks.
Same with the level cap on official.
Gazmus Apr 13, 2020 @ 3:40pm
You can go above 255 if you add the levels on after it has tamed. My therizino has 244 after taming + 28 from levelups in melee. (+42,297% damage)

We did tame an eagle who came in with a perfect 255 though - the melee damage button does nothing for him so he seems stuck there forever, didnt know why it was bugged til now.

It's mostly only screwed over the birds since they don't have move speed they have gone over and reset a lot more often than the others which explains everything.

You guys have been super helpful thanks, ill suggest going with a cheeky 600 cap like Serangel said, we can always lower it if it's too much.
