Mantis Taming.
So, I finally got into doing this. I went out, hunted the deathworms I needed, Raised a wyvern and imprinted on it as much as I could and then I decided the next step was a mantis. So, I got my repellant, my broth, created a cage for the insect and went out in search of one. Well, I brought one back and the thing attacked on the way down, glitching him into a frenzy inside of the cage. I went inside the cage with no repellant on or anything and he refused to attack me, he instead wanted the walls.

So, I discarded the first and went on for a next and we also expanded the cage walls another two layers, now making it a 6x6. Found another lovely mantis dropped it in and this time it worked! I snuck up, got the prompt to feed and then it aggroed on me. Once more, I walked in and the thing only wanted one of the walls. So, we picked it up, dropped it out in the wilderness and eventually, camels killed it, RIP.

Third try, we brought a lovely and very high level female home. We expanded the cage to a now 12x12 and tried dropping her in. Eureka! It worked! She wasn't aggro, she didn't flip out or anything. My friend attempted to feed her, but upon doing so, despite her not looking his way, she aggroed, not him, but the wall. We moved out and when he went in to kill himself, he forgot he had his high level vulture on his shoulder. RIP mantis.

So, I did some reading and people said "sit on it." So, off I went to find yet another mantis. Found another high level male this time and brought it back. I sat on it, my friend tamed it under my wing, but the thing started to go ballistic. Apparently, a wild doedy came within, oh I don't know, a 90 ft radius of my pinned down tame and it wanted it badly. Now, I didn't let it go get it, I infact tried to kill it, but the thing got fromunder my wing, hit the doedy and reset the 40% taming bar...

So we tried yet another strategy and put the mantis on the HIGHEST mountain top we could find that had NO enemies on it. Well what do you know? It worked? Well, it did, until an anklyo spawned 110 ft down (Exaggerating, but it was far.) The thing aggroed, ran off the mountain and landed beside a sabertooth. I snagged it, brought it up to the top where it had 74% taming completion, it ran off the cliff, hit an anklyo and reset the process.

So, let me get this straight. I know why mantis are hard to tame, I understand it. You want people to go out, get deathworm horns and passive tame them, but to reset the timer everytime it feels something brush against a rock 40 ft away is a bit rediculous. Any tips on taming these would be helpful, because as you saw, we tried a lot of things. This is on a private dedicated btw and it was a lvl 540 mantis.

Just kill everything around the mantis and tame it. We`ve done it a hundret times.

Alright, haven't tried that, thanks for the input. I was told that vultures in the desert would cause issues.

We never had problems taming one in our default 2x3 large taming box. You need to be sure it is not aggro before dropping it (when it attacks you or the walls it is over).

No idea if the trick still works, but if you tamed it in walls not built by your tribe (for example have a friend leave the tribe to build it) it won't aggro the walls if you have it aggroed, and it will reset aggro after you ran out of range.

We never used bug repellant or the soup, just a ghillie suit was easily enough.
