How do you calm down hyenas to tame them?

I've tried a couple of times to tame hyenas in singleplayer. Doing it outdoors seems almost impossible, because they tend to share territory with saberteeth, wolves, and various other horrible things that will happily eat both of you. But it also seems to be impossible to use a taming pen. Picking one up seems to instantly freak it out, and I've never gotten one to calm down. Even in a fence foundation pen (so that it isn't standing on foundations) they just bounce from wall to wall. And when I've tried to get far enough away to reset the AI, they just despawn.

Is there something here I'm not seeing, or are they just that stupidly difficult to tame?

Seriously, how do you calm the stupid things down? I can't tame them where they normally live, because every single area they spawn is infested with DEATH. And if I pick them up via flyer and move them to a taming pen, they NEVER exit freakout mode. And it appears that it's impossible to knock them out and reset them, because they DIE before being knocked out by anything I've tried. (I can only assume they're completely immune to torpor damage.)

And yes, I am wearing a full ghille suit. It makes no difference, because as I said, they never exit combat mode. Ever.

The only way ive ever calmed an animal out of agro that wanted to kill me was to knock them out, and then wake them up, or let them wake, they never wake up with agro, it is more time intensive but ive tamed a lot of passive tames doing this, it ALWAYS works.

Well, I've tried it six times on high level hyenas now, and it *NEVER* works so far, because they DIE before they get knocked out. It may work on anything else, but it certainly doesn't seem to work on hyenas.

Leaving the area and reentering it always resets it for me and no, they don´t despawn over here. Still hard af to tame them..

Here's what you do

Build a square with 4 foundations
Make the 4 wall height all around, 1 doorframe for entrance, and 1 ceiling outside that doorframe
2 ladders so you can get up

Dump the hyena into this pen, dismount your bird and crouch, go up ladder and then inside and down the pen, the hyena should be completely oblivious to you thanks to this ingenious design.

Have you tried using the calming effect of the Pachyrhinosaurus?
