For small time raiders I guess. Low health though. Couple stabs with a decent pike and they're your raiders lunch.
I like Thylo's tbh they pack a decent punch, can be left on walls, have decent health. You could leave a couple troodons in your resource rooms along with some Dimorphodons. Traps can help, like bear traps. Place them right on a corner so when stepped on you get pelted by a turret and can't do anything unless you have a shield.

depends on what you're defending the base from really.. is it PVE or PVP

dilo pack ftw

Melee attacks have AoE in this game (why?). Any small dino pack tactics can be crushed by a single large dino with half-competent rider. Dimorph swarm can work better due to ability to attack rider directly.
Inside the buildings though, troodons+microraptors+pegos are somewhat effective, but it's an unobtainable mix for beginners.

i personally like making a manmade beehive with about 5 queen bees in it. the only drawback is that their render distance is super short so for it to be effective you have to have that area loaded. kentros and trikes can be good for smaller dinos, rexes and spinos are good for medium to large dinos, and then a giga on neutral is alright for larger threat (if pve)

As for PvE, I noticed that Kaprosuchus is great for picking off pests like Dilos, Pegos, Compies and Troodons.

I would recommend dimorphodons & archaeopteryx INSIDE the buildings to deal with players, paired with some troodons.

BUT: honestly, the dino AI is soo crap (actually non existent) paired with zero pathfinding, they dont really have defense value regardless of behavior settings. The only meaningful defense is turrets...

*Microraptor! NOT Archeopterix!

I have to point this out, because Archeopterix is completely incapable of fighting. Using Lystrosaurus to defend your base would be more effective!
Microraptor is the one that can attack people on their mounts.

For PvE and big bases i would say Gigas :P

Thanks for correction, Sir!

I am on pve so its probably overkill, but i leave a T-rex on neutral to take care of stuff that gets in where it shouldn't... And almost every day when i log in i find more hide in his inventory hehe. He's also one of my strongest T-rexes (21k hp 400% melee) so if he ever got out while fighting something off, i doubt I'd have to worry for his survival
