Falling into a pit of despair...
So... am I correct in assuming that if you die by falling into a bottomless pit, there is no way to recover your items?

I honestly didn't even KNOW that this game had bottomless insta-kill pits outside of boss-arenas. Seems unfair. You've got flying pets, Arteopteryx, parachutes... there's no REASON why falling into a pit, however deep, should just instakill you and erase all your gear. I was going CAVE-EXPLORING! I brought TONS of valuable stuff and supplies, including irreplaceable things I found in supply drops... >.<

It actually gives me an idea. There's a known bug where dying in the deep sea causes your body and items to immediately disappear, rendering them irrecoverable, even with mods. Maybe THAT'S why - die deep enough down, and the game just assumes that you fell into a pit? >_>

Logically, you are, of course, right. Also logically, there's no way any flying dinosaur or prehistoric bird would be able to carry the weight of a grown human on its back... but you know what? You CAN ride all of those! Because it's a GAME, and it would be a lot less fun if you COULDN'T.

Even more logically: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BOTTOMLESS PITS! There's ALWAYS a bottom. Maybe that bottom is lava! Maybe it's an underground lake! Maybe it's covered in spikes! But there IS always one. The only place in this world where things can just fall down and then disappear is in a friggin BLACK HOLE, and you're not gonna convince me that the Ark has one of THOSE aboard...

It's basically just lazy programming. Between Arteopteryx and Parachutes, and the Gliding Suit and Climbing Picks added in Aberration, there isn't even such a thing as an INESCAPABLE pit anymore. So if they were gonna be lazy about not programming in an actual bottom, however hazardous, that you could try to escape from, the least they could do is to program in an unrealistic way to retrieve your gear after falling into their unrealistic hazard...

You know, people keep saying stuff like that, but... it just doesn't make any sense. If you don't bring your best armor and your best weapons when going on a risky expedition, when DO you bring them? What's the point in HAVING them if you just leave them locked up in a vault somewhere for fear of losing them permanently? Why even BUILD a nightvision-scope if you're not gonna bring it when you go cave-exploring? For sure, you're gonna encounter a lot more risky situation if you always leave your best stuff behind...

If you are this unhappy with Ark perhaps this isn't the game for you.

Adapt and overcome.

Either learn how not to die in game.
Or add mods to alleviate this problem.

There really aren't any other options.

You can fill out proper and detailed bug reports on survivetheark.com.

I never said don't bring anything good. I said don't carry "everything." You should be able to lose a couple of weapons and some armor. Just make some more. If it is something you can't replace and can't afford to lose you don't use it if you think you are going to die in a bottomless pit.

And yes, I know this is a game. But it is a survival game, so even though they do put unbelievable stuff in there like buildings on the back of birds they still have to put things in that will kill you and give you no chance of recovery. These are very rare instances where there is no chance of recovery, play accordingly. Survival games shouldn't hold your hand 100% of the time.

I love how it's not his fault it's the games fault. Change the game not the behavior or the person who messed up.

...did you actually READ my initial post? My complaint is that you CANNOT retrieve your stuff AT ALL, if you die in a pit or the deep sea. Both of which are prime dying-locations... THAT'S what I'd like to see fixed.
THIS? THIS???? this is what you want fixed compared to ALL other known exploits bugs and glitches? THIS? THISSSSS?????????

That logic... You can't ride on a flying dino but you can because it's a game. There's no such thing as bottomless pits but there is... because it's a game and it's a mechanic in the game.

How is it lazy programming if it was designed that way... wouldn't it be lazy programming if the hole you fell down due to negligence didn't kill you?

Everyone falls down a hole in Ark at some point. Just make or find more gear.

If he wanted an actual fix complaining on the steam forums of all places literally accomplishes nothing.

I play on both - the pitfall was on SP, though, so I guess I COULD go back to an earlier save... hmm. Heck, I might just do that, depending on how far back it is.

On single player, I seriously just end task out of the game if I die anywhere inconvenient or if I'm in danger of losing a tame. Nobody got time for that. Always reverts at least a few minutes back before you got into trouble.

... AND ... when you do carry a ton of really special crap, don't wander close to death traps just to admire the view. I mean, you were carrying a ton of really special stuff. Good time to, you know, BE CAREFUL, right? Sure the game could always be better, but common sense would have avoided this problem in the first place. And that makes the game good enough in my view, and this whole thread pointless. You're basically petitioning to turn this into a survival game that doesn't punish idiotic actions. I mean we've all taken a little risk here and there just to check out something that looked cool, BUT NOT WHEN CARRYING ALL OF OUR MOST VALUABLE CRAP. This one is on you, OP.

Ok look. I have died plenty of times underwater in the deeps and only a hand full if times was unable to get my gear back. Unable due to threats in the area still lingering.
Unless something new has come up drop bags still works. And i mean new in the past 24 hours.
As for lava or thos pit.. Dont jump in them.
Lesson learned now u know.
Good luck and game on.
