Ark Dev kit, little help making a HUGE map
just got started on Ark Dev Kit and was a following a tutorial. they showed how to generate the sizes of the maps, which is great and all, but i was wondering can they go bigger. is there a way you can make a custom sized one somehow?

Ragnarok is 4x the Island map.

I would suggest starting small while you learn.

And join the modding discord.
you can get a custom sized map, but i kinda forgot how to so keep searching. the option is available

The Skies of Nazca dev has claimed his map is as large as the DevKit will allow:

Skies of Nazca is the largest landscape mass you can make in the ADK currently. In other words if i tried to make the MAIN landscape (included ocean floor) any larger the editor couldn’t push it live. so ...its big...its VERY big.

It's hard to say what you mean by "bigger". Bigger than what? What size is the map you have and how big are you wanting to make it?

Don't forget vertical space.
You could have a massive underworld cave system.
Even floating island(s).

it's suppose to be very large, Much larger than the island. im planning on making an underground world with it as well, but i want to focus on the surface first.
If you need a better picture, let me know

At the top of Steam click on "Help" and then "System Information" copy and paste the resulting text here.

Yes, and it's the same computer isn't it?

Well, what I meant is your map resolution in unreal units and the scale you intend to use, which determine it's actual size in km². Maps like ARK uses are broken up into components and streamed in as separate map files because combined they would be far too big for the engine to load all at once. The Island is technically 27x27 components or 729 UE4 map files stitched together to make one map.

This thread (starting at the linked post) explains some of the fundamentals and theory behind UE4 map creation and scaling fairly well: https://forums.unrealengine.com/development-discussion/content-creation/28153-calculating-exact-map-size?p=1369970#post1369970

Devkit will barely run with only 8 gb of ram. Everything will take forever and you will crash a lot.
margalus Apr 1, 2019 @ 6:54pm
Yeah, you are going to need a new desktop computer with a lot of ram and a good cpu if you want to do a "huge" map. Have you ever even made any maps for UE4 before? This isn't something you do on a whim.
