What map to start with?

Is it a bad idea to start out as a new player in say Aberration instead of the original game map? I love exploration and underground stuff and the like but unsure what the best map for a noobie to play on is?

Yes. Aberration has many more hostile creatures in a much greater density. I would strongly suggest starting out on the island, at least for a while, to get your proverbial feet under you. There are plenty of caves and other subteraanian shenanigans on the island as well.

Starting on either The Island or Ragnarok would be your best bet

Ragnarok, definatly! Its THE map! Also has Scorched Earth features ;)

Island..If you are interested in the Storyline. There are several caves to conquer.

Ragnarok or the Center are both good free DLC maps.

I would advise starting on the Island map. It has alot of caves both on land and in the water that can be explored. Ragnarok is also a decent map to start on with a larger assortment of biomes to explore.

Island is good, center would be a good bet too. ragnarok is very big, aberration very deadly, extinction very odd and scorched... well noone really plays that xd

In my own opinion, Island has had the most love and is the most balanced / well rounded map. My favourite map is the center so maybe my opinion is biased.

First month, island

Second month, SE or Aberration

Then Extinction

Personally, I'd start with the Island. Very beginner friendly, But not much in terms of content or Dino Variety, After i ascended on Island i swapped to Aberration, Definetely a big step up. So my suggestion is to start with the Island, Then play the other 2 Free DLC Maps. Then after you've gotten familiar with the controls, Weather and whatnot, Then consider buying/playing the Paid DLC Maps.

The Island was always terrible for me, because OP Spinosaurs were at all the rivers, and ridiculously OP Alpha Raptors ran around every segment like maniacs, prepared to pounce on me and kill my entire dino army, and camp my corpse so I couldnt retrieve my stuff. I have had way more success playing brand new characters on Aberration and Extinction
