Single player official settings
If i dont change any of the settings whilst playing single player (Single player box not ticked) will my single player world have the same rates as an official server ?

The ones I recall offhand are baby raising stuff like time spent as baby, maybe food consumed, etc. It also outright changes the dino level cap to 30 from 150. Many many others.

A hidden change is a nerf to boss difficulty although that may scale with the difficulty setting...

And as a general FYI related to this topic, the general recommendation is to avoid hosting one's own server via the Ark menu Host/Local button and instead host a server outside the client, using 3rd party software. Rent one online or simply download free programs of which Ark Server Manager is one. This solves numerous issues.

I'm not an expert on SP, but I couldn't figure out how to replicate official settings in SP. Unchecking use single player settings and setting the difficulty to 5 wasn't enough. I think you have to actually edit something in the .ini's.

Anyone want to clarify this?

Even after a dino wipe I was getting dinosaurs spawning in multiples of 2 instead of 5.

No, you're quite right. The default key will set the difficulty at .2 or something even if single player is unchecked, my mistake.

The bottom line is attempting to mess with the in-game settings menu is a nightmare. If your kid gets on and hits the default button it'll change everything. Everyone recommends you go modify your ini file and set it to read only but why not just use a personal server? That way you can have different settings per map, Etc

This is a very common misconception, and a very reasonable one. However it is unexpectedly wrong. Running a personal server even on the same computer that is playing Ark actually, allegedly, performs even better than hosting from within the client! I have certainly had zero problems running my own server on the client computer and I have a very old motherboard and CPU.

The extra memory usage seems not even noticeable, although I do have 16 gigabytes. If you have 8 there may be an issue but I doubt it.

The internet usage is utterly irrelevant, games typically take very little internet compared to video or even music streaming. The introduction of latency to the equation will indeed be an enormous headache, however this is irrelevant when running one's own personal server. You can essentially run it within your LAN, achieving ping times of is low as 5 milliseconds. You can only open it to the internet, for example to invite a friend, if you choose.

I'm happy to give a brief tutorial on how to get started as well as examples of why it's preferred, if you would like. However they will still be Googling required.

The example of a child was a theoretical, to show the problem with that method.

It's actually not that broken, it's simply one of the games that requires slightly higher technical expertise than the plug-and-play type.

Hosting one's own server and running a client has existed for a long time, but it has always been tricky.

It was a joke.
