GTX 660 should he bother?
I have this game and am thinking about purchasing it for a friend. The problem is he is just shy of the minimum requirements. He has the GTX 660 instead of the minimum recommended GTX 670.

Anyone with experience on a 660 in this game? Do you think he could maybe get 30 fps with all graphics turned to lowest settings? Or would it just fry his computer?

What are his other components? With ark GPU is key, but there might be a chance his cpu could pick up enough of the slack for him to squeek by if it’s stronger. also how much and what kind of RAM?

I believe he has 8gb of DDR3 RAM and his cpu is like some sort of i5 4 or 8 core. It is an older computer unfortunately. I have a 760 I could throw into his computer but I think with his mother board there would be throttling "if I understood it properly when I researched it before".

Not sure if I could still get a performance boost for him with it or not even with the throttling maybe.

Watched some videos after making this post. Some people are getting a functional game with the 660. Just not a very pretty one.

Do a search over the last 3+ years and you see that quite frequently one of the main reasons people have issues and complain on the forums is due to having a computer below at or only a sliver above the game requirements. Yours and his wants just arent matching the reality of the situation. Essentially trying to jackhammer a square peg in a round hole.

Caveat emptor.

Are you trying to say that it won't achieve 30 fps at lowest settings?

To be fair that's why the OP is asking *before* giving his friend the game. He's aware that his friend's machine is near or below minimum specs, but he's checking to see if he could squeek in.

Are you trying to say that it won't achieve 30 fps at lowest settings?

Im saying, depending on the context, your friend may not even be able to play and is a crash waiting for a place to happen.

Again caveat emptor. You both know you're trying get him to ride a tricyle in a NASCAR race and expect to not only qualify but to place.

People will undoubtedly come on here and say "my toaster works" but again, do a search and see how many times people complain of issues to then reveal they've a rig under the min requirements and then table flip(and or blame WC).

Yeah my big concern is weather or not it will run, and run at 30 fps at least. I did do some reasearch and I did see a large array of reported problems and based on my experience with other games I have already come to the realization that 90% of the people reporting major game breaking issues are in fact, people with below recommended specs.

So the point of this thread was to find someone who might have experience with a similar set up to determine weather or not there was viable concern.

That all being said, after now having watched numerous videos and reading a few threads, I am convinced he should be able to play the game fine at low settings.

I disagree and easily can cite so many examples of this for 3+ years including a few eventual I told you so's after warning otherwise. But its your money and both you and your friends frustrations otherwise. *shrug*.

I got ark "running" on my old craptop with 4gb ram and an amd a8 processor. I had it at the lowest settings getting barely 30 fps, looked a bit like the old Turok games actually, but it was technically playable.

i*m running an gtx 670 using the launch option with DX10, settings are on med-high with res scaling to 100% with an resolution of 1680x1050 and i'm getting 60-100 frames on the center map no problem, your friend should be ok with his 660 i guess :)
