With that out of the way, youtube is a great source to learn the game.
This series (multiple seasons) taught so many of us to play.
Island, Center and Ragnarok are all good beginner maps.
After that, once you get your bearings, you can move to unofficial if you need some actual player company.
Don't ever go official... Ever...
While it is a rather challenging Mod Map with a couple of additional Mods added to the game, there's nothing like diving right into something to test your meddle in some regard. Right? Heh.
Despite the real challenge our map and mods may give you, we are a very small group of players at this time who are more than happy to answer questions, provide tips and assist you along your journey in truly trying the game and learning how to best survive in your own unique way.
There really is no "best way" in a survival as it's truly about playstyle and preferences.
That is Herbivore Island, as it is called, and it is a great place but, a couple of things to watch out for.
First, you have to cross deep water in the raft to get there, and unless your server has disabled or in some way modded it, the Leedsichthys likes to hang out in that area and it will attack and quite possibly destroy rafts, which is a big deal to a newbie who may have everything he owns on that raft (and his body). So be careful with this and be aware it can happen.
Second, if it is not a private server, Herbi Island is a popular base site and someone else will probably already own it.
Third, if it is solo or a private server, be careful where you build stuff. There are some of the few metal nodes on the top of the plateau there, which you can get to as a newbie and not die regularly, and if you build foundations too close to them they will not respawn again, ever. Also if you are soloing, never, ever mine out a node and then immediately exit the game -- the node will be bugged and might not regenerate. Make sure if you mine it out to stay online, in game, on that island, until long enough goes by that the nodes have reappeared first, and THEN exit.
I do agree with the singleplayer advice -- SP is all I play, and it's great fun, and I have learned a lot about the game at my own pace. Plus SP means I can build whatever I want wherever I want, and the only thing I have to worry aboud is wild dinos coming after it. Which is not too hard to defend against.
Also I ditto the Phlinger Phoo recommendation, "Soloing the Ark" series. Yes it is a little dated but in the ways it is, there is no big deal. 90% of it is the same and he gives you a really good explanation of how to tame things, how to build things, where to build safely, how to set up a starter base, and when and where to look into moving to a good "perma base" after you are established.
