Ark Freezes and Locks Up Causing Me To Restart My Computer
Once I load into any server after about 5 seconds my ARK completely locks up and freezes and I have to restart my computer to close it because there is no other way to get passed it. Sometimes I can play for 30-45 minutes and my game locks up and freezes causing me to force shut down my computer again. When playing the game I run on about 30-60 fps all high settings, don't have many immense fps drops. I have tried many possible solutions.

-sm4 -nomansky -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -d3d10 ( I have this in launch options, does not help )

Specs:

System Model - XPS 8900

Processor - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.41 GHz
Installed RAM - 16.0 GB
System type - 64-bit operating system, x64 based processor
Windows 10
Graphics Card - AMD Radeon (TM) R9 370

My game is also occasionally freezing, and I have to restart the computer as well. I don't remember this happening before except when sometimes going into caves. Now it seems random. I've learned to make sure to close the game if single player or nondedicated hosting to save progress just in case.
Open case. Clean PC. PC's don't generally restart / shutdown like that unless they're overheating. Why does it do with Ark? Ark is punishing on computers, always has been. Why is it doing it now? Probably because your PC needs a clean.

Depending on where you live, once a month is good. :)

If I remember right it isn't actually isn't shutting down when the pc is hot. But I'll keep that in mind. Had a bad experience when I asked my dad to clean the dust out of my old pc....he lost some screws AND couldn't figure out how the computer was put together before! LOL Once took my mac (I AM NOT USING MY MAC TO PLAY ARK) to get cleaned by Apple and the guy came back obviously shocked. He asked how many animals we had. Apparently it was pretty gross. If it shuts down a few more times on me, I'll watch a tutorial if I have to and make sure I don't lose any parts. I do have access to an air compressor but I think it might be a little too strong.

Yeah, a "little".:steammocking:

Seriously though, just buy a can of compressed air designed for these kinds of uses. You can mess things up just by using the blow/exhaust on shop vacs.

A bit more testing and for me it doesn't crash when I play single player or local host. Therefore, it is something about playing online that is causing the crash. I tried different servers, and it happens within the first 5 minutes on any public server I played on, after spawning. Anyone else?

Not me, I just crash completely randomly. Official, unofficial, modded, vanilla, Island/scorched/rag/extinction, it crashes more reliably when I'm going either higher into the sky or lower into the water (almost always resulting in my death).

Crashes to the point I have to force restart my computer because it's just completely unresponsive.

RTX GPU cards

Launch ARK (DirectX 10,Low-End Graphics)

Or turn the shadows all the way to low (everything else set to ultra)

Been there, done that, slightly reduced the frequency but did nothing to actually stop the crashes.

Reading the recent news.
All the NVIDIA RTX ray tracing and DLSS games confirmed so far.

My problem with frozen screen has been solved.

So you can confirm it's the GPU?

I have the AMD radeon r9 380 series sapphire.
Is that what's doing it, and how can I test that?

If you're still running that same driver that showed in your system info, that could definitely be part of the problem.

That driver is from 2017. You have: Version 17.2.1 (21.19.519.2), Release Date: 10.02.2017. That's the broken old discontinued driver for Win 8.1 (which AMD has abandoned as an OS).

You should be running the newest version, 19.5.2, that just came out Monday, June 3rd: https://drivers.amd.com/drivers/win7-64bit-radeon-software-adrenalin-2019-edition-19.5.2-june3.exe

It's what is listed for Win 7 (64-bit) on the R9 380 download page here: https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-r9-series/amd-radeon-r9-300-series/amd-radeon-r9-380

I had an AMD graphics card which was pretty decent and I did a downgrade to a Nvidia based graphics card, the AMD was suppose to perform overall better, however Nvidia was the one. Haven't had one single crash since switching!

One of the Amd drivers with a particular mouse driver (sorry don't remember which one wasn't mine) was causing crashes in Ark. Even removing mouse caused issues. Reading some of the post about outdated drivers here this may be the issue.

This is why everyone gets annoyed with helpers when we first say "update your drivers then....."

This issue wasnt apparent with nvidia cards it only showed with AMD causing some to say Ark hated AMD cards.

From what I draw from the article it has to do with the ray tracing / dlss technology in the latest RTX cards. This technology was not yet present in the Unreal Engine, but now it is.

My computer is running windows 7, every time I try and update the drivers it says it is updated.... am I going to have to upgrade to Win10 to get the up to date driver to run Ark, or am I supposed to downgrade...?
I'm confused...
