How do I use dino candy?

I had one of these that seemed like it'd make a nice color change on a dino and I fed it to a rock drake (put in their inventory then use) but nothing seemed to happen. Is there some trick I'm missing or does it only work on certain dinos?

Maybe your second guess that it works on certain creatures only - maybe it's just bugged.

I'm hoping someone in a tribe with a lot more people to gather items know's as solo well I doubt i'll even find any more coal.

Must have been the lighting and the facts its movement speed didn't change. Now standing next to its twin there's a definate colour difference.
