I also really like the Thylacoleo, it's slow but bred Thylas are extremely powerful and their all-terrain ability is unreal. It's a good swimmer, it can climb rocks and trees, it takes very little falling damage and it fights well.
And finally the Procoptodon. They're kind of rare, but they're a lot of fun to ride. They're among the fastest mounts at a sprint, but they can also leap enormous distances and heights with great precision. For covering a lot of ground quickly I can't think of a better choice. They're also useful for breeding.
But my absolute favourite is the Rock Drake, which combines the Thylacoleo's terrain climbing with the ability to glide and a faster run speed. It can fight like a demon, and even turn invisible. It's also a freaking dragon, and you can give it Tek armour. What's not to love?
I also like the Tapejara, not so fast but again very usefull to explore/search for something or a dino with it ability to fly and turn on spot; + you can land on cliffs in case the ground is too dangerous. it also have more stamina and weight than a ptera.
Finally i would say a good horse, lvled in speed, is always enjoyable and a fun and fast way to go from one point to another especially on flat maps with good sightings like scorched earth. It's also very appreciated around communities that play (a little) Rp.
But yeah the best one is probably the rock drake since it kinda have it all + being stronger and the stealth.
Another advantage that horses have, on unffocials, is Saddle Emporium. With the Explorer saddle they're fast while also carrying over 1000 units of resources. Perfect for quick gathering or trading trips. And armour makes them very viable as early-game and even late-game hit and run platforms. They're not as stable a shooting platform as a direbear, but they're better in rough terrain and can absorb a lot of damage with a good set of flak armour.
Overall I'd prefer a Direbear for mounted combat in open terrain, they're as steady as the rock of Gibraltr and that's ideal for sniping. Their attacks also strike a full 360 circle around them, which is a massive plus. And a Kangaroo is a better high-level Raider and transport. But that's two seperate creatures and two very difficult tames, the Horse is close-enough and is easy to get and cheap to maintain.
I actually prefer land mounts. It saves me needing to use Classic Fliers, which would seriously effect my load times.
all mentioned points on thylas are valid. I don't use them often, myself, but we keep some around.
the dogs and cats are ok. i don't run around with a pack, since the ai pathfinding is AIDS and I hate having to keep track of them all.
Trike are a decent option, especially in the beginning, and I wouldn't use sarcos far from water.
Just pick one species. (What's closest to you on the map?) Tame a bunch. Breed, easy since they are mammals. get some imprints on a mate boosted pair at min or a small army. I wouldn't spend that much time breeding for perfect stat. Maybe for a caving dino, but I prefer the bary for caving.
Bears and thylas are worth more time breeding. Higher weight. Better land mounts.
Or theriz..fast and you can breed them for bosses.
Recently I'm really enjoying zipping around on my Tek Raptor.
-Cheap saddle (+doesn't need to be crafted at the smithy)
-Gets paste from killing bugs (+1 shots bugs)
-Can jump high, swim fast, and run fast
-Can knock out animals if needed
-Small
-Easy to tame
The beelzebufo is so good, the only thing that I see bad is the melee damage. Otherwise, it's a flexible mount that I really prefer.
Before the Spino though, the Baryonyx was a great mount. It's basically like a Spino but smaller and I still use the Baryonyx for caves because they're strong and fast and can do the lower south cave by being able to swim through and tail spin all the Piranha's and Sarcos. And they're also great mounts to tranq from because they're agile.
