From the Island I prefer the Direbear and Thylacoleo. Direbears are powerful and extremely fast, with a good carrying capacity. They're perfectly still and level while stopped, and don't bounce your aim around much in motion. They're a perfect runabout for open country.

I also really like the Thylacoleo, it's slow but bred Thylas are extremely powerful and their all-terrain ability is unreal. It's a good swimmer, it can climb rocks and trees, it takes very little falling damage and it fights well.

And finally the Procoptodon. They're kind of rare, but they're a lot of fun to ride. They're among the fastest mounts at a sprint, but they can also leap enormous distances and heights with great precision. For covering a lot of ground quickly I can't think of a better choice. They're also useful for breeding.

But my absolute favourite is the Rock Drake, which combines the Thylacoleo's terrain climbing with the ability to glide and a faster run speed. It can fight like a demon, and even turn invisible. It's also a freaking dragon, and you can give it Tek armour. What's not to love?

I'm a big fan of the thylacoleo too, very usefull and immersive actually when you go explore an unknown map.

I also like the Tapejara, not so fast but again very usefull to explore/search for something or a dino with it ability to fly and turn on spot; + you can land on cliffs in case the ground is too dangerous. it also have more stamina and weight than a ptera.

Finally i would say a good horse, lvled in speed, is always enjoyable and a fun and fast way to go from one point to another especially on flat maps with good sightings like scorched earth. It's also very appreciated around communities that play (a little) Rp.

But yeah the best one is probably the rock drake since it kinda have it all + being stronger and the stealth.

Another advantage that horses have, on unffocials, is Saddle Emporium. With the Explorer saddle they're fast while also carrying over 1000 units of resources. Perfect for quick gathering or trading trips. And armour makes them very viable as early-game and even late-game hit and run platforms. They're not as stable a shooting platform as a direbear, but they're better in rough terrain and can absorb a lot of damage with a good set of flak armour.

Overall I'd prefer a Direbear for mounted combat in open terrain, they're as steady as the rock of Gibraltr and that's ideal for sniping. Their attacks also strike a full 360 circle around them, which is a massive plus. And a Kangaroo is a better high-level Raider and transport. But that's two seperate creatures and two very difficult tames, the Horse is close-enough and is easy to get and cheap to maintain.

I actually prefer land mounts. It saves me needing to use Classic Fliers, which would seriously effect my load times.

bear or rhino, imo. both fast, both durable, both carry a good bit. rhino can instakill most wilds while charging, but you really got to avoid getting caught with low stamina, and it can have some janky clipping while trying to fight/turn (but that's just an inherent part of Ark: RubberBanding Evolved).
all mentioned points on thylas are valid. I don't use them often, myself, but we keep some around.
the dogs and cats are ok. i don't run around with a pack, since the ai pathfinding is AIDS and I hate having to keep track of them all.
Trike are a decent option, especially in the beginning, and I wouldn't use sarcos far from water.

My only complaints with the Rhino(which is an outstanding mount BTW) are the difficulty/expense of getting one, and the turning circle. But those are relatively minor gripes on one of the best transport mounts you can get.

For the wolf vs sabertooths argument. They are about the same. Wolf can be a bit more damage. And sabertooths can be a bit more armor.

Just pick one species. (What's closest to you on the map?) Tame a bunch. Breed, easy since they are mammals. get some imprints on a mate boosted pair at min or a small army. I wouldn't spend that much time breeding for perfect stat. Maybe for a caving dino, but I prefer the bary for caving.

Bears and thylas are worth more time breeding. Higher weight. Better land mounts.

Or theriz..fast and you can breed them for bosses.

I love my Thylas, they are awesome. Since I play on Rag i've never had a Rockdrake.

Recently I'm really enjoying zipping around on my Tek Raptor.

You do need the animals mentioned if you want to be able to see when you go into the swamp or jungle, but I like theris. It is harder to see in those two places but bred theris just about as good as a rex but they are smaller, gather berries, fiber, hide, organic polymer, wood and thatch. They don't go into caves but they are wonderful for everything but caves swamp and jungle.

If you have Aberration, the ravager is a very good land mount, even for other maps. It's like a direwolf boosted for transport, thanks to his weight base stat and especially his awesome 50% weight reduction on wood, thatch, metal, fiber, crystal, obsidian and stone.

I prefer the Beelzebufo (Frog), they're great.

-Cheap saddle (+doesn't need to be crafted at the smithy)
-Gets paste from killing bugs (+1 shots bugs)
-Can jump high, swim fast, and run fast
-Can knock out animals if needed
-Small
-Easy to tame

The beelzebufo is so good, the only thing that I see bad is the melee damage. Otherwise, it's a flexible mount that I really prefer.

My main mount is normally my wyvern honestly, but we use speed saddles on the server I play which helps. If I do use a land mount what I choose often depends on what I'm doing at the time. I have to agree that the thyla makes an excellent mount overall so it is one of the ones I prefer but I'll take a spino or a bary if I'm planning to do some swamp work or know that I plan to go through deep water on my trip. Horses can also be good but they are relatively easy to kill especially if you get webbed and overrun in a place like the burned area of ragnarok. If you do have abberation, the rock drake and the ravager are both incredibly useful, though the rock drakes glide becomes less useful on flatter maps (still pretty decent usability on ragnarok at least). Another bonus to the rock drake is that you do have the ability to use weapons while mounted, though on official settings range is the main reason to do so because the rock drake will probably do far more damage than you can with your weapon.

I pretty much use a Spino for everything. They're great for getting around now with their speed boost in rivers, you can get across the island in no time just following rivers. They're a lot stronger now that they can stand on two legs and use the swipe attack. They have pretty decent weight to carry things if I need to. I can cut across areas just by being able to swim.

Before the Spino though, the Baryonyx was a great mount. It's basically like a Spino but smaller and I still use the Baryonyx for caves because they're strong and fast and can do the lower south cave by being able to swim through and tail spin all the Piranha's and Sarcos. And they're also great mounts to tranq from because they're agile.

Thyla is great for its climbing, decent combat, fast.
