Is there any usefullness to the pet option Wander?
I thought they could not mate or eat from troughs without wander on but I am reading conflicting info on this. Anyone know the exact facts. What is the real benefit of Wander?

They can only mate while on wander.

Wandering should allow three major benefits: 1. They should eat from troughs (mine do), 2. They will breed if two dino's are ready to breed, 3. they can collect resources for you and be combined into packs (carno's with non-carno's for protection).

Personally, if you are trying to breed up then I only allow them to wander when you have a pair you want to mate and then trap them in an enclosure of some sort.

1- They do not need to be on wander to eat from a trough, if you see the trough symbol above their name, they are feeding from it.

2- You can use wander for your gatherer to auto collect resources (berries, fiber).

3- You use wander for mating, either in a small enclosure or from a hitching post (prefered method).

You can also use wander has a sentry method, if you have a huge Dino pen cliff side where dinos can fall in, you put a few Rex on aggressive wander to keep the place clean.

They eat from troughs on any setting. Where did you hear this? I've been seeing new people say this lately and it's completely untrue, I'm trying to figure out where they are hearing this from.

I found this very helpful! thanx to everyone who answered and to @OP who actually asked the question . Putting them on wander , for me..it became a pain . They have a tendancie to go too far . And yes....one of my Dino went way too far..lol I never found her , until the screen told me 'Your dino was killed by X' . And no , I used the whitsle..runned around doing it too..to no avail .
So thanx!

I like using servers that use the S+ mod. It has a Tethering Post you can attach tames to, then when you set them to wander they don'd actually move.

I never actually heard it from anyone else; however, it was my experience from when I just started out - I play on my own private server with some friends and we started off that day.

I had dino's dying and I still do on an occasion, but we have so many now that it's not a big deal. Perhaps the missing piece of information is most of the deaths were babies (juvs really) after they were past the stage of requiring TLC.

They would have no problem eating food that was in their inventory, but they would never eat from the troughs.

At the time we only played with the Structures+ mod, but now we have quite a few.
Dinos do NOT require Wander to Feed from troughs, howerver if your dino is not close enough (see trough icon over its head) they will starve and not eat.
Other than that, wanser is used for mating and also to get them off you when they and you are stuck together.

Just fyi, if you leave 'land' dinos on wandering on a small island, the water's edge acts like a bit of a fence. They won't wander into the water, giving you free reign to let them roam as much as they please, provided your island is safe from threats (like herbivore island). Amphibious dinos will wander into the water though, like turtles.
