Because it unpacks it to a much bigger size and needs room to swap files.

Lots of games do the same since it's a steam thing, but lots of games aren't over 100gb for the base game.

i don't think so. I have 650+ games and no one only ARK is so stupid in his update system. i mean where's the logic that i need that space for the full game to install a update!? there is no sense

Ok, basic 1*1 how steam handles big downloads...
Download the ziped data ( here 8.2GB)
Unzip the data (depending on the compression that add up to lets say 50GB)
Copy the data to the location/install (here you need another 50GB)
Delete ziped and unziped data, you are then left with the game

Tadaaaa, in the process of handling the data you need 8.2 + 50 + 50 = 108,2GB of disk space
those numbers are totaly random, but you get the concept with it...

Did you read what i wrote??? The 7.5GB are highly compressed data, if you unzip them you get data wich are waaaaay bigger

How would you know that the other games don't update the same when they are likely 10-20gb getting a gb patch not 120gb getting a 9gb patch.

Ark download is around 20gb but when unpacked it's over 100gb so you should be able to figure out why you need space for the patch.

Ok so uninstall until it fits your wishes for how the game should do the updates, most likely it wont change tho.
How i would know that is I have eyes and can see it... no other games need the space of the full game to install a update that doesn't even make up 10% of the game...
