This lol.
I've not done much cave hunting as I focus mostly on having fun building and taming. But I had no problem the few times I ventured into caves on The Center and Ragnarok. I never went in alone though, had a few pack mules with me with claws and teeth. One of my The Center bases actually had access to one of the caves, if I flew down the access it would auto throw me off my mounts omg did that almost kill me one time, it was shaft that I couldn't go back up... so I just ran for my life past most of the mobs and escaped. Came back with 3 Raptors and all those mobs just for the XP for my raptors. Was a great place to level and hunt for keratin.
At least we have spawns in the caves now.. When I first went into caves with the goal of taming a spider I couldn't find any.. in fact there was nothing in the cave at all..
Considering there are several creatures that only spawn in the caves I was pretty annoyed that I couldn't obtain them.
Happy I can now.. in fact I just did a singeplayer run in the lower south cave.
Went in without any tames.. just a Ghillie suit some bug spray a JM Crossbow and a Rifle with only tranq darts.
Got the artifact and tamed a 120 Spider, a 73 Arthropleura, a 113 Scorpion and a 40 Megalania.
Was a good run.. found an ascendent Terror Bird saddle blueprint too.
Once you've done some of the caves a few times and learned their layouts they're actually pretty easy and loose a lot of their initial intimination.
There are a few hard ones though.. I've still yet to explore a couple.. namely the Eastern water cave and the 2 ice caves which I believe are all full of super high level creatures that can't be tamed.. Don't think you can take tames in the ice caves either so they are gonna be the hardest ones.
If you need advice on what tames to take in the caves most will agree the Baryonyx is probably the best.. it can fit in most of them and kill just about anything you'll find in them..
I don't use them for the water caves though.. Western water cave is easy enough to fly through with a Sarco so long as you avoid the Jellyfish and the Eels where as the Eastern Water Cave can contain Giant Squids and again Jellyfish so I'm not going in there without a high level Basilosaurus since they can't be grabbed or stunned.
The biggest problem with them though as I said is enemies hiding in the walls.. hopefully this is something the devs plan on fixing with the upcoming bug patches.
