However, I would Google this to see if there's anyone out there that has done this.
This is not possible. Sorry but the only cross sharing platform where you get a version free is with Xbox and the Win10UWP(universal windows platform) version from the Microsoft store.
Remember both versions are being maintained by microsoft on said UWP since its a shared platform. They're not exactly interested in letting steam's platform version or ps4's version get on with em, you know. :P
My son wants this game.. trying to decide whether to get it on the xbox one or the PC for him. Is there much of a difference, if any? The one thing I'm really concerned about, is, with xbox (which I don't know much about) is it true that you need to pay a monthly subscription to play ANY game online with friends? I assume the Win10 version can play online for free?
Thanks
go for the pc version you can do a lot more in pc play on all servers xbox is limited and far as i know will not play on unofficial servers
all my family and my kids are on pc we have a xbox coming in but will not have ark on that as we own servers
hope this helps
If you get the xbox version you get the win10UWP version free if Im not mistaken.
However again that's a closed platform by Microsoft and -----not------ steam so if one owns the steam version one cannot play with people who use the xbox/Win10UWP version nor the PS4 version.
Now if instead you are talking about considering getting him the steam version vs xbox, I would make a compelling arguement that the steam version offers him the best overall options of game play due to the robust access to modded content and the wide variety of unofficial servers available.
However, please make extremely sure that the comp to play on is not below, at, or just only a sliver above the min reqs to play ark. Ark is one of the most demanding games on computer rigs out on the market at the moment and inferior/subpar computers just cannot handle it well or even at all.
As for subscriptions, no. Ark is not a subscription fee game. It is buy to play and there are -many- buy to play games that have access to online game play at no additional cost.
retsam1 you are wrong on 1 part he can play with him on a official server because its cross platform
pc and xbox on same server and only on official servers
nitrado is the only one that let you play xbox and pc
Let me try and make this a bit more clear for you.
There are 3 platforms and -none- of them are cross compatible.
1. Steam= Closed platform for itself
2. PS4= Closed platform for itself.
3. XBox and the Microsoft Store's Win10UWP(Universal Windows platform)= Closed plaform for the 2 mentioned versions on the Universal Windows Platform.
Official servers are seperate for all platforms.
Thus, I'm not wrong, you're simply mistaken in understanding the versions and the context of the whole thread in which this was discussed.
To make this more clear: a Steam computer version of Ark cannot play with the Xbox/win10UWP version.

this is very clear here
we only talking about xbox and pc playing together not ps4
as the guy said xbox or pc
hope this is super clear now any other questions should be asked in ticket to wild card about nitrado and cross platform playing
What part of stating all 3 platforms are closed to each other are you failing to understand here?
Ive said this multiple times now to help clear it but some how you seem stuck on understanding that. I was only mentioning ps4 so that the accuracy of that understanding could perhaps help you.
But evidently you're having trouble with even that.
Wildcard using Nitrado as a server hosting service for official servers on any platform are irrelevant. Again, Each set of official servers is seperate for each platform and you cannot cross play between platforms.
Wild card gave exclusiv rights to nitrado for cross platform and that is only pc and xbox this if you dont beleave then go chat to wild card and stop telling people they wrong i already posted a link about this

"
Xbox Play Anywhere
In addition to the Aberration update, barring any cert issues, Xbox
will receive the Play Anywhere update on December 12th. This update will
allow crossplay between the Windows 10 version of ARK and the Xbox
version. Survivors will be able to choose to allow crossplay on their
unofficial servers or non-dedicated sessions with a simple checkbox on
the host menu. "
Hmm.
I will ask around with my contacts at Nitrado for public info. Hang in there. :)

This is what retsam1 has been trying to tell you in two posts above, you can cross play play with the Microsoft Store windows 10 version and Xbox.
Steam - Closed
PS4 - Closed
Xbox - Windows 10 version from the Microsoft Store - Cross Platform
