There is no way to play ARK again on your crap, just forget this game, and simply forget "Gaming" with Apple.
Apple is the typical hipster brand that make you pay for 100% garbadge product that arn't worth the price at all.
PS : The components of all Apple products are the same as every other brand, so ... Why ? Just why ? Why are you stupid ? XD
I don't know much about mac or your computers potential specs. I always thought they were meant for business style use and, not gaming. Ark is one of the most demanding games, maybe someone with more knowledge about mac can help, but generally for demanding gaming you need a gaming computer to keep up.
Business ? MAC ? Every other PC does the same without the stupid price (1000€ for MAC ? LOL)
300€ for a good Windows 10 PC (Especially for "Business"), with tons of softwares that you can't have with MAC ... Because nobody cares about Apple hipsters.
My gaming PC cost me 1100€ ... And it litteraly ♥♥♥♥ on every MAC of the same price, so ... Good anal sex for the person who bought the MAC ? I guess ? But that's not a problem, he will pay 1000€ for his Iphuck X anyway ~

Windows 10 (Windows forever, Apple can go rot in hell).
16 GB RAM
INTEL CORE I5 7600K @3.80GHz
GEFORCE GTX 1070
60 FPS with MAX settings.
Maybe, he'll have to pay 3000€ to get the same specs with an Apple computer, so good luck for saving up that much.

I don't know if the graphic is your problem. You can choose at the launcher without sky, etc.. I bet it is more about the TLC update that needs more CPU Power.
And don't listen to that nonsense post about Mac's. Sometimes there are People who have no clue but are stubborn to their small knowledge about computers. Mac's aren't priorized made for gaming. Doesn't mean they are useless. *shakes head*

When I was in high school I didn't know much about computers and thought macs were good because of their price range. I paid $1500 for something that couldn't even run minecraft on fancy grapics.
A year later for $800 I got a windows laptop that could run minecraft, spore, and even skyrim. That macbook, which had three hard drives in the span on one year becuase its parts were garbage, was the worst computer I ever owned. My first $300 laptop was better than that mac.
I built a desktop two years ago, and it cost me $1400. Almost the same as that mac. Yet, my desktop with its gtx 1080 can play any game I want on high settings. My computer can do almost anything and I'm not limited by apple software.
I also have a samsung notebook 9 for work. Thinner than a macbook, has an aluminum case, touch screen, two in one capiblites, i7 processor, 2k screen, and a decent SSD. For a mac with similar specs it would cost much more, and there still woudn't be a touch screen, much less it being two in one. Turning a laptop into a tablet is much more usefull than people think. Makes using office apps and showing people things easy.
Apple parts are made in the same factories as pc parts. They are the same parts. So why pay hundreds more just for that little half-eaten apple symbol?

The components of EVERY Apple products are the same as any other PC / PHONES, everything !!
You just pay the brand, and i'm not an ignorant at all with PC's because, i repair, buy and sell PC's every week, it's my hobby (lol) and i think i have a good knowledge on the differents parts ;)
I bought every part for my actual gaming PC and i built it on my own, it's a big ♥♥♥♥♥♥ beast !! And even if someone wanted to give me the best of every Apple products, i would just sell it back, get the money and buy way more things from every other brands.
Brands are just brands, in my opinion, you shouldn't have to pay for a BRAND, but for the COMPONENTS and THE WORKERS WHO BUILT IT !! Nothing else (That's how the world should work).
With Apple, you just pay the brand, not the components and not the workers who put those things together ... At all ...
ANYWAY !! Going back to the subject, the only way to play ARK again without any problems is to sell that piece of crap MAC you bought (Even if it's worth nothing to be honest), save up money and build or buy your own beast that will fullfil every task you'll ask.
Apple is good to make you think you're special if you buy their products, but ... You're not special, you're just giving your money to the wrong people.

System Scans - antivirus, defrag, malware could slow things down.
Updates - installing in the background on your operating system.
Drivers- Update your videocard drivers might help.
harddrive - if its old, could be dying with bad disk sectors.
Verifiy your game client with steam.

Macs last long time ? Ofcourse, since you can't install anything on it ... Use a Windows PC just like a mac (Without anything on it, and trust me, it'll last 100 years without any problems).

Here what is différent about Apple compared to other kind of PC :
- Different look with a cuted in half Apple as logo.
- Different system.
- Price.
That's all.
Components are the same as every other PC (I actually disbanded some macs to get parts and ... What you got inside is simple : Intel, Samsung, and other brands components)

I build and sell PC ... I repair PC's and i often get some MACs than i can disband to get some useful pieces, i know what's inside ~
You should really open your eyes man and objectivly take a look at that.
If Apple lowered their prices to the standard of any other brand, i would without any problem say that they got good products ... But that's not the case, and it's even the opposite.

First off, people use apples mainly because they're uneducated. Maybe they don't want a gaming PC, or they don't have access to a few hundred dollars? Some old @$$ macs are sold on ebay for a decent price. I agree, apple overprices things. If you want to help this guy, shut the f4ck up and list him some specs that can work. You're a pc elitist, we get it, you like PCs. You're not special. I can list off 50 people in my high school that can repair PCs, as well as me.
Another reason people might buy macs is because it's appropriate. Macs are often standard for workplace meetings and such, even for programmers/hardware startups. Does that mean you should pick out every person who has a mac, and start sh!t talking them? No. It doesn't. Get your mind out of the gutter, buddy.
There is no real way to boost your performance without upgrading your hardware. It's near impossible to find a laptop with the power to play ark.
The highest setting I can play ARK with a 1060 6GB and i5 6600k is about high, and that's at 50-60 fps. 1060 6gb = $260, i5 6600k = $230 (roughly). About $500 to run this game on high, excluding other parts like motherboard and RAM. If you really want to play this game/you're into gaming, look into building a gaming pc. Not all gaming pcs are $1000, or even $800. You could probably get away with playing this game on medium, since there's so much content. But you'd be able to play many other games high settings.
Also, if you are going to custom build a PC, use pcpartpicker.com and watch many youtube videos on building PCs. That's how I built one at age 12. If I could do it then, you can do it now, given you have the money to do so. Good luck.
I'll always talk like this to mac users ... Even at work, it's not appropriate because a lot of softwares arn't made for Apple (And it's too expensive for a start-up, especially when they need to get some crowfunding, they wont put that money on MACS while they could use it to develop the thing they want to do)
And i'm not really working on easy PC's like you do sorry, i learned from the basics old retro PC's that were not as simple as the PC's we got right now ;)
Using the bios, you know ? Just to be able to start Windows so, i just doubt that much people can actually repair a PC ... Not fan of liars.
