Sabertooths
I was lfying my ptera north to go find an argy. When I hit the redwood area I was casually flying around the treetops. Suddenly I get knocked off my dino and eaten. I couldn't see a thing, but I did managed to see the death message that said I was eaten by a sabertooth.

Do they hang out in the trees tops? Can they knock me off my dino? Do they have stealth mode and go invis?

The Thylacoleo is a giant bear cat that hangs out in the tree's of the redwoods and can knock you off a mount and pin you down. Most likely that is what happened to you and a sabertooth just happened to be near by and joined in and got the last bite in.

Thats a Thylacoleo not a saber. Maybe the Thyla didnt kill you properly and the saber took adventage of your. Sabers dont knock you off but Thylas sitting on the trees can even knock you off a wyvern if youre in pounce range.

This. It's very dangerous to fly recklessly through the redwoods. You have to go slow and look out for thyla's hanging on the trees. If you see one go around from the back and knock it off with an argy or something. If you fly past it in range and are grabbed make sure your flier is set to neutral, and is following you. you can shoot them while they have you pinned and I always keep medical brews on my hot bar next to food. I pop a medical brew when dismounted before everything else then go for the guns. mainly becuase it is very disoreanting and hard to see what is going on. the medical brew will give you enough hp and buy you time to fight it off or your mount to.

I've had thylas knock me down many, many times (live next to redwoods). I always have a good sword ready to whack at them, which seems to finish them off pretty quick. They also seem to have a particular elevation they like to jump from, mid-tree level, so if you can stay towards the treetops you can usually avoid them. Kapros do a similar thing on the ground, knock you off your mount and carry you off, munching the whole time.
