First the bad news:
I'm afraid you won't be able to reclaim that character, unless you have a backup of his LocalPlayer.arkprofile. This is the file that was overwritten when you chose 'create new survivor'. The sleeping character is in your .ark save file.
If you have played a lot with your new character, restoring LocalPlayer.profilebak is no option because it will be your new character as well.
Now the good news:
You can get your old characters gear back if you disable 'pve mode' in your single player options. (Host/local, tab General, scroll down to the checkboxes, tick off 'pve mode')
This allows you to access his inventory.
Best of luck,
Carthien
Uh yep, sadly this is the case.
The sleeping char you see is likely simply a save of an unconcious body as an item on the map world and does not mean your actual character still exists somehow. (the body is saved but the soul is damned)
Sorry
PS: try using copy/paste once in a while to make backups, they can really come in handy later.
Here is a screenshot of my save folder. Keep in mind that I installed under my A drive which is the letter I assigned to my storage drive (I don't trust Ark's massive updates to be gentle with my SSD, but probably should since it is not that bad)

I was a bit confused by this, at first I thought I had lost all my data structures and what not. Not a huge deal seeing as I don't have much. But what was disheartening was the fact that my character was around lvl 60 with all kinds of engrams learned.
I finally make it over to my base with this new generic character to find yes it's still there and I'm like huh? what happened? Why did the game force me to make a new character? Walking around I soon realize I have no ownership of the three pets I have and there she is... my character asleep on the ground where I was gathering supplies.
Tried to exit and re-enter the game a few times only to log in as the new character with my old character asleep at my feet.
Seeing this post is a little more annoying that there is no real fix to this issue. Mostly because my former character was my first successful attempt at making a character look good with the base game sliders.... instead of just changing hair/eye/skin color.
