Screen tearing issue
Hey everyone,

I'm running a rig with:

GTX 1080 FTW2
ASUS ROG STRIX X370-F
AMD Ryzen 7 1800x

Playing ARK I'm getting a ridiculous amount of screen tearing, and the game just generally does not look good.

I'm not sure what fps I'm pushing, but it doesn't feel smooth as if the frame rate were 60 or higher.

Does anybody have any possible explanations for this or solutions?

I've been going back and forth between "High" and "Epic" graphic settings, I've entered the command "r.vsync 1" to unreliable avail.

I've turned off and on the motion smoothing feature in-game, with mixed results. I'll turn it off because it makes the fireflies look ridiculous and bright when I turn, and then when I turn it back on the screen tearing is back even with the r.vsync 1 command having been plugged in.

Long story short, I was playing this on PS4 and switched to PC because my PC is vastly more powerful then the console, but the game looks like garbage on my PC.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Compared this to running a benchmark?

What is the refresh rate of your monitor?

instead of using this command "r.vsync 1", go into your NVIDIA control panel "Manage 3D Settings", under program settings choose ARK and turn Vertical sync "ON", this will make sure that it runs at the same refresh rate your monitor can handle.

One thing you can do also is start the game with the Reset Game resolution and readjust.

I seem to have the screen tearing mostly under control on a diferent server.

Oh this is great! I'll try it out. I got to 3D settings before but didn't know how set defaults for individual applications.

How do I run a benchmark? I'm new to PC gaming LOL. I appreciate your patience.

Try what BRC said first :)

There are various free benchmarking tools you can google.

They basicaly stress test your system cpu/gpu/ram and let you know what it should be capable of /issues it might have.

Def runs better after enabling vsync via the NVIDIA controller.

I've done a bunch of stress tests and even brought it to a pc shop to have everything tested bc I've been having this issue in AC: Origins where after a while the comp will just blaack screen and restart.

It had only happened while playing AC and once during a FurMark stress test. I eventually updated the BIOS and it became much more infrequent.

But all of a sudden the system just crashed in Ark too!

So bizarre!

I've been running DOOM without any issues for hours, solid 60fps. Its much less demanding, undertandably.

I'll have to check the error codes.

what type of power supply are you using. I had the same issue as you, other games would run great, soon as i played a more demanding game my pc would just crash. For my case it was that my power supply even though was a 1500W bronze rating it could not give my computer the power it needed when it asked for it. So i switched it out with a 1000 platium and have not had a crash yet. Just something else to look at for you, since crashes can be caused by so many things.

I'm using a 1000w Bronze at the moment but I've been considering doing just that! Maybe I should...
