Roll Rat taming
Anyone else have trouble taming roll rats?

Okay, so I wait ‘till it burrows and then I toss honey at the hole, got it. I’ve successfully tamed a few rats now, so I must be doing something right. But of the 30 or so pots of honey that I’ve tossed at underground rats, most of them haven’t been eaten.

I’ve yet to tame a rat with a decent taming effectiveness. Most of the time I drop the honey on the hole, it disappears, the rat doesn’t get any taming, but rather its taming drops, and I get more frustrated. Inconsistent success is worse than total failure!

What the heck is going on with roll rats and dropping honey? Is there a trick to getting decent taming effectiveness with these rats?

Please tell me your experiences.

Is the honey expiring? i know WC made honey spoil to "balance" it as no spoil timer would make it OP, i'm not sure if the honey can expire while on the ground. Desync can also happen i found, especially if a server is being laggy on either end of the connection. Rollrats sometimes will do the burrow animation without actually burrowing as well, i have thrown many a wasted honey at these fake burrows.

My experience is that I toss the honey (that is not expiring) at the burrow. The honey disappears. About a 1/4 of the time the rat gets some taming applied, most of the time not. It’s frustrating.

are you throwing it out of your inventory or do you place it at the "0" hotkbar key and press 0 when its underground?

I'm hotbar keying it out into the burrow. As I said, it works about a third of the time. As far as I can guess it's either that I'm placing the honey pot in the wrong place (not close enough to the center of the burrow?) or at the wrong time (to soon into the burrowing or to late?).

It's just that missing 1/3 of my attempts to feed the rat results in terrible taming efficiency and I wonder if I'm the only one with trouble, or if anyone else has similar experiences.

Best would be someone who experience the same thing and then discovered something that made it better! anyone?

it always worked for me, i press 0 as soon as i cannot see the rat anymore and im standing right next to it so the honey will land on top of the borrow

They will sometimes glitch and come back out of the ground early, or be at a different point to where they actually are. If this happens then they won't eat the honey and it'll be wasted. Keep an eye out in the areas where you notice this happening. Wait a second or two after they're burrowed to confirm they're going to stay under there. The radius that they eat the honey from is pretty big, so shouldn't be due to that.

You have high ping?
Lag could be the problem.

There is an AI rotation the burrowing goes through with the rats. If in the AI it rotates in the animation for a short term burrowing/coming back up, the honey will be useless on that toss. Its frustrating and I think inane of WC to do this but the mechanics of more than a few of their tamings(especially on some passive tames) are just a mess.

Also other factors can be server saves, lag, even earthquake animation initiations can cause delay in reaction/response by the player and the burrowing AI so that it mucks up.
