Does everyone need DLC or only the host?

I know some games now days only require the host to have the dlc. So If my friend does not have the dlc and I do, will he still be able to play in a server I host?

The DLCs are at the core, just basically the maps, so if your server is using a map they don't have, then they can't play on it.

you can still play together, you just have to use the island map or one of the free ones
he cant play on a dlc map he doesnt have even if the server hosts it

All dlc creatures are part of the core game files, allowing everyone that doesnt have the dlc to still be able to interact with the creatures from the dlc.

You could even go as far as manually adding all dlc spawns to the island map without ever owning the dlc.

All the dlc is for is to unlock the original map the creatures are from.

I tried joining a Genesis server without having it, and it crashed my game.
So, the answer is no.

Just not maps the DLC adds it’s specific player items also. And all the DLC add different items. Without the dlc you can’t get engrams to make those items.

As was stated above... The DLC's are JUST the maps.
Given you have already stated that you're on the Island... and that comes with the base game... Then YES your friends can play.

Think of it this way. Were it to work the way you seem to think it works then how could people play on the servers without having problems? Anyone who owns the DLC can travel to those maps and bring dinos back. Just login to any Island dedicated server and see countless dinos from all of the maps.

Yeah.. you must have DLC map to play it but items or dinos are taken from host - his DLCs must be installed to get for example in Primal Fear all of the dinos from aberration (like Karkinos).
