he cant play on a dlc map he doesnt have even if the server hosts it
You could even go as far as manually adding all dlc spawns to the island map without ever owning the dlc.
All the dlc is for is to unlock the original map the creatures are from.
So, the answer is no.
Given you have already stated that you're on the Island... and that comes with the base game... Then YES your friends can play.
Think of it this way. Were it to work the way you seem to think it works then how could people play on the servers without having problems? Anyone who owns the DLC can travel to those maps and bring dinos back. Just login to any Island dedicated server and see countless dinos from all of the maps.
