PvP vs PvE, Private Server (Single Player)
Hi,

I'm setting up my server for myself. I've heard, and nothing concrete, that having PvP rules is better then PvE due to some sort of dino mechanic? Is this true? Just need clarification so I know what checkbox to click. Thanks

Oh is there a option somewhere for fliers carrying dinos somewhere? I'll have to dig deeper in Ark Server Manager. I also suppose it wouldn't hurt to just enable PvP since I'm the only one on there unless there is a reason not to.

Yeah there's quite a few options when comparing pvp to pve.
If it's only going to be yourself (or with friends) just go with pvp.

Got it, thanks for the clarification and responses!

why are you hosting a server if it's just yourself? wouldn't it be easier to just play singleplayer?

Based on research, it is strongly suggested that the game simply works better on a server then on single player.

Most of the performance difference between dedicated servers and just playing a local game can be credited/blamed on two factors:

1) Servers typically run on better/faster hardware
and
2) When playing single player your computer has to act as BOTH server AND client.

So yeah, you can get a bit more performance from a server install but it will be most noticible if your server is running on a different machine than the client. If you are running both on the same machine it won't be as much of a difference.

Running a server is a fine idea though, even if it is on the same machine, as Studio Wildcard sometimes releases configuration options that can be easily set through the server command line or .ini files but which are annoyingly difficult to take advantage of in a single player game because they don't add them all to the menus.

Also by running a server you can play from other computers when away from home, or invite people to play with you even if your available times don't overlap so much.

On the original pvp/pve question, I'll say that on our server (about 10 active players) we run with PvP rules turned on, but everyone is required to be members of the same tribe to prevent friendly fire incidents. We've found that offers the best balance of rule defaults.

Ya, all the above is basically what I was too lazy to type out :p There is also (was?) an issue with cave spawns not working correctly on single player in the past. Not sure if that was ever fixed or not, I only found out from research but most of those posts were old (I just didn't find anything to suggest it was fixed either). If nothing else, this Ark Server Manager really makes things simply and it is easier to customize then what the normal Single Player interface would provide.

And ya, that makes sense for PvP side of things.
