Tether Distance On A Non-Dedicated Server
I wanted to buy ARK for my friend and then the two of us play co-op. I want to make sure if he puts the tether distance to 99.0 and runs a non-dedicated server that everything will run smoothly. I know it requires a beefy computer which he does have but I have heard things like, you can't walk into a cave alone or go into the water, Is this true? Is there any other things like this that I should be aware of?

Depends on which map your playing on. When ever you exceed the tether range, or change zones, you will get ported to the host.

Some maps, going into a cave, or water means you are changing zones and will get ported to the host no matter what you have set the tether range to.

But then again, most machines that can setup as a Non-Dedicated Server have enough resources to setup a dedicated Server and the Ark client instead and therefore not have this issue. Its just a bit more effort to set that up

If you go down the Dedicated Server path, I recommend getting Ark Server Manager, it does most of the work for you

Ah. Thanks for the quick reply. I've been researching this for a lil while now and I think we will setup a dedicated server then.

AFAIK the computing resource overhead of a dedicated is mostly 3-4GB of RAM and about 10GB of disk space...

I agree, this is why I am surprised anyone runs a Non-Dedicated Server instead of a Dedicated Server. I guess Dedicated Server take a little bit of setup while a Non-Dedicated Server, its just hit a button

Yeah i'm looking up how to start a dedicated server without steam saying the host is playing ARK. Pretty confusing to me.

IMHO because there is nothing to do more than starting an already donwladed and installed software by Steam, read the game. The change between true SP and non-dedicated is just a different place to click to start the game session. Nothing more. It is simple, it is straightforward, it is streamlined.

Less to do, less to read, less to know... ...just another case where ignorance dominates knowledge... ...IMHO nothing new, all as usual...

HAHA WDF. I did all the stuff in ASM, started my server as a new survivor and right beside me was a Titanosaur. Thought that was something worth telling you guys. XD!
