Why don't more people play Aberration?
Do people actively dislike Aberration? If so, why?
Is it just because Aberration is a paid expansion?

Personally, Aberration is my favorite map. The extremely vertical world with no fliers makes exploring and expanding much more challenging. The ziplines and grappling hooks are a fun way to get around.

Plus the surface on fire, ravager packs, radiation, and poisonous mushroom clouds add so many new challenges to the game.

I'm thinking of making an Aberration custom server - wondering what settings would entice people to actually come play.

I think Aberration isn't very popular because of two things; it costs money, and that flyers are almost non existant. It's a map that forces the classic ARK player to find more ways of mobility and new tactics for survival.

It's a BADASS MAP. Period.

SE and AB are specific experiance maps. They really arnt designed for longevity of playing like the island or rag.

I know I got really bored after 100hs there.

^ this

also the map seems extremely small. probably cause 1/2 of it is locked away in BS radiation or surface fire which makes the map that much more boring. feels like you only get a really really really tiny square to play in. i can get from 1 end of the play area to the other in like 2 mins on a drake and thats mostly running on ground cause i still suck at trying to get it to glide.

also with the actual play area of the map being so small pretty much all spawns are now killed off cause of all the bases everywhere making it not only a tiny map but a empty one. crabs for example have become extremly rare. they still spawn but definately not like they used to and if someone eats 1 of the 2 or 3 crabs its a good while before we see another.

edit to mention how broken the kibble system is. if you want a anky or doed you get 6+ hour tame time cause devs decided to add absolutely useless dinos like dodo instead of kibble needed dinos like dilo's as example

Ragnarok is the worst in my opinion. It's all patched together. Aberration is much more immersive and themed.

I don't know why so many people like ragnarok so much, imo its the worst map by far, it's way too big so the good spawns are super spread out and it takes forever to get anywhere without a good mount (which is really easy if you have cflyers but not so easy if you don't)

imo the island is boring unless you're playing a heavily modded server like annunaki or something, no good base building locations that I've seen (except redwood treehouses) and the map itself is just a big island

the best map is definitely the center imo

Same thing happened on SE. People will always go back to the most rounded maps which the paid DLCs are not but they don't pretend to be. They are there to challenge the player.

I think it has a few months left, most people bored now are those who transfered max level characters over, play in stupidly large tribes or play ridiculous rates.

Not sure what the aim of facerolling new content is but I hope they enjoy the wait for the next dlc!

This certainly seems to be the case - most of the popular unofficial Aberration servers are x50, x100, or more. I don't understand why people want such ridiculous rates - it reminds me of creative-mode Minecraft.

it's because you don't really want taming to take hours unless it's hardcore PVP server and you don't wanna spend days gathering the 10k cooked metal you need for your base when you're trying to start on a new server (but you don't wanna get raided every night by relying on stone for two weeks)

personally though on rates over 10x or so everything feels value-less and meaningless so i prefer servers with 3-10x rates, not too low that you'll be stuck crafting rafts on the beach for 8 hours but not too high that you can lose 20 gigas in a day and shrug because you'll replace them in an hour

I suppose there is less dino variety than the standard maps, but otherwise there isn't much difference in things to do. Either Ark is boring to you or it isn't I think.
No, Ark is not boring to me.

But there are few dinos on aberration, only 2 that worth breeding. Ravagers and megas.

Also idk who choose the dinos to put there, but its basically dinos nobody uses because there are better dinos: spinos and carnos.

Early game tames raptors, trike.

So after you get ravager, mega, karkinos and drake its pretty meh map and there is nothing left to do. 4 usables tames, 2 breedable.

you forgot basilisks and reapers as useful dinos on aberation

you're right that there's a lack of dinos especially useful ones though, there need to be more aberrants with useful differences like the aberrant mega

Basilisks are meh as well, reapers again another non breedable tame.

The map is designed in a way that there is nothing to do when you reach late game. And well late game comes really fast if you consider I play only with one friend in a 2.5x harvest/xp/ 10x taming and I started a new char there.

Also what some people like the verticality of the map, I consider poor design very often that makes everything boring and tedious.

Ie you're in blue zone and need go to green. One way out you can use 4 zip lines and ravagers or climb with a drake. Another way out there is a ramp but only one way leads to the ramp, so you can keep going around with whatever dinos or use a drake. Not even a crab can get a shortcut because its so terrivle designed that leaves one path.

Im fine without flyers and the map being vertical but give people choices. Ok have one ramp, but you should be able to jump with a crab. You should be able to put 2 zip lines and get there.

I could keep going explaining why I consider really poorly designed map and the only positive side is it looks nice.

the verticality seems like a great idea in theory but without flyers and grappling hook going up seems tedious, like something that would be cool for a while but get old eventually, the map definitely needs more dinos though

what else do you find poorly designed?

For now, Ragnarok is the most popular map with over 17000+ servers of it.

Currently Aberration comes in second with 15,000+ servers.

However, I'd say in a few months there'll be a shift down in those regards as that's exactly what happened with SE eventually. Everyone always chases the new shiny then resettles elsewhere.

While Aberration is more annoying at time, It's my favorite map thus far. Mainly do to it beinga ruined Ark, Technology parts everywhere, and feels like a Sci-Fi setting. Will see if it changes when Extinction is released, cause that looks like a very fun and intresting map.

I like the map in terms of its looks and dinos but one point I dont care for is its environmental constraints. Outside of that its just another SE to me and Im more just waiting for the various mod makers already working on either incorporating such terrain and assets into their maps or other mod makers coming up with their own iterations otherwise.

To me, it, like SE, its is nothing more than a toolset demo.

Aberration is my favorite map. I love not having flyers and have to traverse using ground. That being said I'm definitely at a point with not much left to do. That's why I was pumped when mods became available but nothing good yet. I would like a mod to add more diffucutly or spawn other tough dino's spread in other area's other than blue and red. It definitely would benefit having a couple more new/unique dino's. So, modders out there....get it going! Lol

A toolset demo to be more precise. Assets etc all shown off in a set to see or play but with the focus being to be then expanded upon, altered etc via the devkit. Think on it more like the old Neverwinter Nights game where there was campaigns made to show off the creation toolkit but the intent was primarily for folks to make their own servers/campaigns with. Ark is really no different.

Oh i get it, so you think the only purpose of aberration was to give modders more toys to play with

But it has its own story and lore, how is it any different than the island for example

Just like in the case of NWN's old game its campaign was the same. Having a story to show off doesnt necessarily preclude it from being that afterall.

I find it interesting that many people seem to want Aberration to be harder. I wonder if a Primitive version of Aberration with added Dino variety (but no fliers) would have appeal.
