Story line to follow?
Okay, purchased the game yesterday. I'm about an hour and a half in on my own trying the game out. I like it. The skill tree is kind of cool. Makes a multiplayer game seem deeper and more fun. I'm wondering, if we ran this at a lan for about eight people (we ran The Forest at the last lan and it was amazing), is there any story or objective to complete. I guess what I'm hoping for is that if we just run a private server with the people at the lan, that we can make a base and then start branching out and exploring the map (looks like there is more than one too?) is there something to do other than survive with no other people involved in our game? Is there any way to find out what the f is in my arm? Does venturing out to this glowing columns lead to anything? I made it to one small green one and it said it was a supply drop and I wasn't high enough level to open it. Is there an objective to the game is we lan it and are all together? Is there a bad guy? A way to escape the island etc.?

Thanks.

There are notes you can find hidden around the map that show accounts of other survivors and dossiers of different creatures.
There are different bosses and storylines around the DLC's. The vanilla map has 4 bosses as of now.
The giant glowing columns allow you to upload dinos. You can then download these dinos on different servers in the same cluster.

"storyline" is some explorer notes hidden on the maps.
Also ascending by doing bosses.
You start on the island, then Scorched earth, Abberition and Extinction last.
The Centre and Rag are community maps and non canon.
About the Glowing collum, the large ones are obelisks. They are used to switch inbetween servers (uploading chars and dinos).
The smaller versions are supply drop and contain some loot, level restricted bound to their colour.

Its a sandbox, you can decide your own goal like ascending, building a base, taming stuff, waging war (well, if you run private its at best a skirmish between you and your firends).
You could call the bosses "bad guy" but doesn't fit well.
You only can "escape" to other maps.

You can transfer around on the small drops too, the difference is that they're temporary

So yeah, basically the "objective" is to defeat the three bosses which unlocks the fourth boss. To beat the three bosses you have to find and explore the various caves around the island, which are significantly more challenging than the island's surface.
Okay, so after I defeat the four bosses on the island map, I gain access to the next map, which has more bosses?

More or less. Scorched Earth only has two bosses and Aberration has one big boss, but then Extinction does the three bosses and then a fourth thing except they're all Kaiju.
Sounds like more work than can be done at one lan party. :)

All in all, w.o. cheating, modding or upping the rates, its more that one does in a few hundred hours playtime. 1-2kh aren't too far off. You'll be quicker because you can split the work.
