Wish to rent a private server, question
Just curious if its possible to rent a private server for 2-3 players. I have looked at nitrado but everything for ark is a public server. Or it needs 4 people to start the server, as its just me and 2 other people max to play, we were looking into renting a server.

I have hosted a non dedicated server but as you can guess, if Im not on, they cant go in and play without me. Any way around this without building a new computer just to host?

If you have a decent computer, you can host and play on the same system.

Of course you will have to leave it on and let the server run as long as you want people to connect.

You can rent a 10 slot server (this will be the min everywhere). Either password protect or use a whitelist (called exclusive join).

Sorry I forgot to mention I dont want to leave my cpu on all day everyday. But thank you for that option.

As for the min number of players, am I reading it right when it says it needs 4 people to play at the same time before it starts? Or can I do that whitelist/exclusive join and we can play with two people?

Nitrado and g-portal are two cheap easy sever hosts. You could rent a server for just 1 person. But the min slots to buy is 10.

The interface for both hosts i mentioned have a text box entry for exclusive join. You just enter steam64ID one per line.

if you're planning on getting serious with a server, renting one will be more expensive in the long run by alot (like if you plan on getting any sort of player base you're gonna need atleast 30-50 slots and 30-50 slots is something like $30-60 a month and most players aren't gonna play on it if it's not a cluster between different maps, so you'd be renting multiple servers), i'd rent one at first to see if you can actually get a decent player base going, if you do end up getting a loyal and decent player base then you should build a dedicated machine with an older Xeon thats on ddr3,(90% of server hosting sites use these older xeons and a kit of 32gb ddr3 ram is like under 150 cnd ) you don't need a good gpu for a server machine you can use any old gpu just for hdmi or VGA output , and you can build said pc for under 500 cnd. thats my advise

Thanks guys. We just wanted a spot to do our own thing, with a few friends. Didnt really want a huge server, but I can see where a big player base helping with costs would be benificial.

Slots are how many can play at any time.

Ok I need to work on my reading comprehension, I was looking at it as thats how many had to be on at the time for it to start. My apologies. Thanks for clearing it up.

Can you run multiple maps on those or do you need to rent a different server for each map?

10 slot server for each map you want to run is the smallest/cheapest.

Or you could just rent 1 server and switch the map occasionally. FTP backup your save files.

Around $15us per month for a 10 slot server..... 10 slots is the smallest commmercialy available that ive seen.

Thats $3.50 a week if you break it down :)... and its no contract... so you can shut it down if you both want a time out.... almost every host has ftp access so you can download/upload backups.... yes, even to different hosts.

So if you do rent one... make sure they give ftp access... if they dont... expect to have other issues with them.

All servers can be not only passworded... but you can white list/blacklist pple as well.

I'm renting a 30 person server from Host Havoc for $15 a month. I have had no problem with them at all. Occasional tech issues are responded to very quickly.
