Any safe methods to reduce install size?
I keep wanting to come back to this game but I'm regularly reminded that I don't play it enough anymore to justify it taking up 140Gb of my hard drive (I have a huge library and only a 2TB to work with) so I'm wondering if maybe there's like unnecessary language files or something, I dunno really what there could be, but is there fat to cut?

EDIT:
Okay so now i'm thrown off cuz when I went to install it said 144xxx mb, and the last time I uninstalled the game I think I saw Like 140 or so, but the install download is saying 32GB...
Did they slim it down or are these files about to unpack to almost 5x their size?

This seems like the thread I might have heard it on.

I'm already at the point where every time I get ANOTHER 60GB game I have to decide which one I play the least, since I try to keep at least 10% of any given hard drive free.
My OS drive has space to spare but I'm tryna keep write heavy stuff off of it, and I know how this game can be with updates

I've heard people have had luck with some filesystem compression that is a part of Win 10; but I am still clutching onto Win 7, so I have no experience with it myself.

Hmm I hadn't even considered file compression due to there usually being reduced performance.
If any of you people that have successfully done such see this, I'd be curious to know what files were compressable or not and which ones negatively impact performance
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

My dude you have turned me on to a beautiful thing. (it apparently can be useful for games other than Ark)
I had no idea Windows built in compression options had achieved this level of efficiency. Times like this I envy the younger generations that don't get stuck in their ways yet like I do with things like this.
Now the only thing I'm trying to work out is if that GUI uses the same utility you get when you right click-> properties -> Advanced -> compress contents to save disc space.
If it's the same function the GUI utility is useless, but if it's not I should learn the commands for it.
EDIT:
Apparently the tool in explorer uses older compression algorithms, so the commands or tool are necessary

Just a quick update:
I never got compactGUI working (it crashed every time I hit compress) but things worked like a charm through the command line.
I've applied it to many of my game folders now, as has my roommate as well, and initial tests are showing files added to the folder are automatically compressed as well.
So far this is looking like a great thing for gamers in general (I know I've recovered about 115GB of space so far) and should definitely be more widely known about.

Have you noticed any difference in your performance? Load times? Stability changes? Differences in "pop in"?

I'm actually about to boot it up and mess around a bit. I've been waiting the past couple days to finish compressing all my ♥♥♥♥ (it only used like 10% of my CPU while running, but it was heavy on the disk reads for obvious reasons)
Reddit users of this command for other things saw no degradation in performance and in some games it improved load times, so we'll see

If you install then un tick the extra maps the size reduces a lot

Good to know, though I sometimes dabble in them. The Total Conversion I might ditch though.

Not at all. I don't have a great test environment though, as I'm just loading up new single player maps. It seems to be running smoother than I remember but it's been over a year, and I've upgraded my CPU since then.
Running around in the southern parts of The Island though are good so far, but it'd be a better test if I can fly around and actually shift environments quickly

That is because you have DLC installed. And there was no reason to resurrect a dead thread just to say it.
