base game is only 61GB for me =)
My OS drive has space to spare but I'm tryna keep write heavy stuff off of it, and I know how this game can be with updates
If any of you people that have successfully done such see this, I'd be curious to know what files were compressable or not and which ones negatively impact performance
This seems like the thread I might have heard it on.
I had no idea Windows built in compression options had achieved this level of efficiency. Times like this I envy the younger generations that don't get stuck in their ways yet like I do with things like this.
Now the only thing I'm trying to work out is if that GUI uses the same utility you get when you right click-> properties -> Advanced -> compress contents to save disc space.
If it's the same function the GUI utility is useless, but if it's not I should learn the commands for it.
EDIT:
Apparently the tool in explorer uses older compression algorithms, so the commands or tool are necessary
I never got compactGUI working (it crashed every time I hit compress) but things worked like a charm through the command line.
I've applied it to many of my game folders now, as has my roommate as well, and initial tests are showing files added to the folder are automatically compressed as well.
So far this is looking like a great thing for gamers in general (I know I've recovered about 115GB of space so far) and should definitely be more widely known about.
Reddit users of this command for other things saw no degradation in performance and in some games it improved load times, so we'll see
Not at all. I don't have a great test environment though, as I'm just loading up new single player maps. It seems to be running smoother than I remember but it's been over a year, and I've upgraded my CPU since then.
Running around in the southern parts of The Island though are good so far, but it'd be a better test if I can fly around and actually shift environments quickly
That is because you have DLC installed. And there was no reason to resurrect a dead thread just to say it.
