Best Dinos for hunting..?
Every so often I needc to go hunting for meat to feed my dinos. Usually I take rexs or Raptors or both. The issue is the Rexs are large and a pain to take on long trips and the Raptors keep getting stuck on trees and rocks.

So what are the best dinos to take out hunting for food, that preferably won't become the food...?

With only 1 mount : Spino

In packs: allos/ raptors if you're using a strong mount to make the path clear by choping off trees and leading the pack through the easiest route.

The only pb with raptors is that you can become the food if you step on a high lv alpha.

With spinos and allos, everything will be torn into pieces...

Wyverns are pretty decent meat gatherers as well, good aoe is great if there is a lot to eat.
And ofc flying is quick.

Well I am on The Island in SP so no Wyverns. I do have 1 Spino and a bunch of Raptors but no Allo as yet. As for "Giga", the only ones I have, and have seen are the Gigantopithicus?, the Big Apes.

Giganotosaurus or some similar spelling.
You'll find them on the island, but do some pre-tame research before you start shooting them

Ok, thx.. I'll do that :)

Rexes are still acceptable choices, Spinos are just faster and has better hitboxes. Gigas are more rare than giga-apes, infact, only 2 can exist at once on the same map (except for Extinction apparently).

Gigas look almost exactly like rexes, except, they're 3x bigger. Wild gigas pretty much can't be killed by any dinos due to overwhelming stats, but they lose most of those stats when tamed, so, NEVER TAKE ON A WILD GIGA WITH A TAMED ONE. If you breed gigas and imprint them, you'll have a monster that will make even a lvl 150 alpha rex effortless to kill.

It really doesn't take much. And you shouldn't have to travel too far either for a bit of meat for the carnivores. Any of the animals you mentioned are fine. As for the giga's mentioned, if you didn't look them up yet they are just slightly larger rex's..

I like packs of small dinos. I use either a pack of Dilos or a flock of Dimorphs. After you beef em u p with a few level points, a good sized pack can take out just about anything. Yeah, some may die against larger dinos but they are easy to tame and replace.

Honestly though, you should choose what fits your personal play style. Everyone's is different and you should find what you are comfortable with, not what someone else is comfortable with.

For hard to navigate areas, I've always been a fan of a flock of pteras or argents. They don't have the best harvest rate, but you can cover a lot of ground; and, at least with the pteras, the spinning meat grinder "formation" they tend to use is a little entertaining.

3 or 4 spinos, for hunting alongside the river ( follow rivers >;))
Same amount allos, give plain hell and bleed to your sourroundings
a fun mix, to train ordering groups while hunting meat
theris, megatherium, pigs,
group carnos riding a yuti ( riding yuti is always a +)
high lvl argy or big group of humans ( well not on SP I guess )

The tickle chicken, Theri, is also a good meat gatherer, and can easily hold its own if you blunder into something.... unexpected.

I agree with wyvern.

Since i know you are a Singleplayer mode player like me:

Because my main late-game base on The Island was in the center of the map with half built on tree platforms on the edge of the redwoods and the main dino pen / breeding area on a big grassy hill area just south of it, and a thin patch of swamp between, i wanted dinos that were fast and agile and that gathered both meat and hide very efficiently.(because high-end saddles take an absurd amount of hide to make, i was always looking to get more) Personally, i dont like gathering using big bulky dinos that cant jump or turn fast, like rexes, gigas, and spinos. I liked using my Thylacoleo and Sabertooth dinos, they can sprint-outrun all threats and gather both meat and hide very efficiently. Both can jump and can turn fast, so getting stuck on trees or rocks is a non-issue. The Thylacoleo can even run straight up walls and cliff faces, and they have a crazy-good jumping arc. They were both efficient for the job and fun to ride. If you have a good direwolf, that could work too, for similar reasons. A pack of direwolves would have the same drawback as the raptors though, getting stuck on rocks and trees, so i usually used Sabertooth and Thylacoleos instead.

Since i do a ton of breeding, if i also needed to gather berries or fiber on the same meat-run, i would use a direbear. Awesome jack of all trades mount. It cant jump, but it does have an ability where the longer you sprint without stopping or running into anything, the faster it runs.

Really, well thats good to know. Gonna have to try and get a couple then :)

@margalus, Good point, its just annoying having to keep goin back to find dinos that got stuck on a tree or rock :) Was lookin for something that can hold its own and cal also navigate the land with less chance of getting stuck and left behind.

@ crimsondrac, never tried the dimorphs for anything, I do have 2 tho..

@Uueerdo, also never tried hunting with flyers.. interesting.

@ Fanne, Well I have 1 Yuti and 1 Spino and a couple of pigs :)....

@ Buster and esthergray, I have 2 of the Theris and I know they can be tough, one of em killed my best Raptor a while back in 2 swipes :(, as for Wyverns, I don't think they are found on The Island are they?

Trough only holds so much and will last for days anyway. I get enough meat to feed 30+ animals just from meat picked up doing other stuff. Or I spend 10 minutes running around with a sword.

Well yes, I do have a lot of dinos but haven't been out much in a while as I have been building and doing other things and food is getting low again. These things eat a lot, especially when breeding more dinos :)

The troughs can hold quite a bit actually, especially with the stack mod I use.

@ ZorTheCruel, That sounds good, I do have a couple of wolves, bears, Thylacos and Sabertooths, might need to get ot breed more tho. The Thylacos could be a good bet for goin thru the jungle parts. Thanks for the tip :)

Thankyou ALL for your thoughts on this it has all helped and is very much appreciated that you all took the time to give your opinions and advice...
