It's on par with games these days. And only takes up a fraction of your hard drive, unless you're still on a gaming rig from 1995.
Spazz Jun 21, 2019 @ 11:58pm
Pretty much, just never been a big problem till now, taking up nearly 300 gigabytes.
Captain Dagon Jun 22, 2019 @ 1:39am
The game is massive because is full of redundant files and the game files are not packed properly, lazy devs.
Captain Dagon Jun 22, 2019 @ 2:39am
Im sorry, but you are full of ♥♥♥♥ Silky Rough (AKA wildcard PR worker), most games like Scum for example pack their files so the game only takes 30 gb, Ark properly packed loads faster than in its current state because your hard drive only needs to read a smaller file size, try it yourself with CompactGUI, https://github.com/ImminentFate/CompactGUI, You can compress the whole game folder to half of its size with no performance penalty.

Explain this Silky Rough? https://i.imgur.com/4lfO0Wf.png
LAZY DEVS ;)

Explain me why you are a poor ♥♥♥♥♥ who cannot afford a 150$ 1tb ssd or a 100$ 2tb hdd.

What about having folders with 62.900 separate files just for the main game? making your whole system slower to index all that crap, they keep it open and unpacked because for them is a pain in the ass to pack the files before patching, like I said before, lazy developers.

Where were you when they were hiring coders? seems like you know more than them how to make games.

The most amusing part about arguments like this is that the moment you defend Wild Card in the slightest, you are obviously either a raving fanboi, or you are being paid by WC (by the perspective of the anti-devs).

Right, so your best way to cover up your stupidity is to call me some kind of shill? If it makes you feel better, whatever. It can't change the fact you have absolutely no idea.

There are many ways of implementing file compression at a devs disposal. It comes down to, wait for it, penalty of decomp' versus penalty of space. Decomp can be done in realtime, on install or cached or a combination.

That's WHY I said look at seekfreecontent, it makes up 60+ Gb on my system and this is a relatively new reinstall. That's a decomp, done in RT and left as a cache for next time to improve performance.

The devs dilemma is which method will work best - taking into account the load on CPU and/or storage. Some games CAN do RT decomp' with little noticeable performance difference for many reasons, spare CPU, or it may be that data is infrequently accessed and so on.

What might work for one game does not simply translate to another game. I even said Ark devs could compress the game right down to save space but it comes at the cost of performance. So they CHOOSE to use the cheapest, most available medium instead of punishing your system - which MAY also be a potato.

Ark properly packed loads faster than in its current state because your hard drive only needs to read a smaller file size,
And what needs to happen so we can use the data? "No performance penalty" you said. Yes, it all works by magic right? Learn some basics. Get back to me.
I'd second all of this if I knew how any of it worked. I don't. I just play a game that I enjoy.

I have all 4 DLCs + all free maps and several mods all together it that comes to almost 200gb so it doesn't seem that big for what I'm getting, too me at least.

Ark is a UE4 game, not a unity game. Most games made in UE4 are trying to push graphically and try to give you the best looking quality you can get. Did they succeed? Eh, kind of? Everything looks great when running epic. At the cost of performance. Ark is a sandbox game with tons of creatures, dense areas, and a lot of data that just sits there because of player owned dinos and turrets. That's a lot for one person or even group. I believe UE4 works with object oriented programming so that means each creature(object) is holding its own data and every other creature is holding the same amount more or less even if it's all the same. It's like sitting on a harddrive that has a ton of programs and data but almost none of it gets used.

Wha? Checking through Local Files tab on Steam...

ARK: 198gb
The Isle: 21.4gb

That's the smallest shot glass for beer I've ever seen. Wait, is that a thimble?

Can I get a real Wildcard Dev to reply to this thread? or its just but hurt people defending to death a game like if it was their sacred religion? your arguments about more is better or this game is so big because it has 5 dlcs, are arguments made by ignorant people that don't know what they talk about but that will defend the game to death with no clue.

So your arguments are the next, the game is massive, has 5 dlcs, lots of Dinos, lots of items and its a "UE4" game....

That defends the horrid file management inside the game? the game has to be big when a team doesn't know how to optimise their asset usage or don't know how to pack things properly.

it defends the fact that the version of UE4 that ARK currently uses is from 2014?(if we are lucky) because of lazy and under qualified programmers that cant port their current work to new versions of UE4 because they wont know how to do it?, hence not having any or none of the thousands of improvements that UE4 got during the years.

The lack of engine optimization?, hence the massively poor performance for a 2014 game?
common, there's many games out there that uses UE4 and run and look much better than ark, ARK is a mess compared to real AAA titles.

Instead of being fanboys and blind sheep try to push the developers to polish their game instead of pushing new crap like ATLAS, it will benefit all of you, that's is if you don't enjoy eating crap and saying its delicious of course.

I own ARK since early access and all the DLC, and i have followed every patch release, and every change log so i know what ARK update history has been like since it came out on EA.
