But personaly.... when i first went to SE... it was butt naked desert Bob.... and it was a ton of fun learning to survive all over again.
Doing this does make it easier but maps like Scorched Earth, Aberration (this one especially), and Extinction are a new level of punishment when it comes to survival. Ultimately it's up to you and I've used the same SP character across all current maps but it's fully possible to do each and every map starting out as a fresh level 1.
If multiplayer you can have more than one of yourself spread all over all the servers. I suggest making an alt of yourself and taking a look around the new map naked no pets first. If you do not like the map you have lost nothing. If you are a male character make your alt self a male. If fem make yourself fem. Because on multiplayer you can write over your own lower level self with you established higher level self but only if you were the same sex character.
Better than that you should investigate all maps in single player first for at least a few hours. Warning do not dive in with your main character from an easy TheIsland Map or easy Ragnarok map right into the harder dlc's. Unless you are into pain.
In multiplayer: To actually transfer you go up to an obolisk and click "Transfer Player Character" tab. This will open up a list of servers. It will not transfer you until you have picked a server.
