Multiplayer vs Singleplayer?
I’m probably gonna play multiplayer by myself, but I like the concept of raiding. Is it worth starting on multiplayer, or is it too toxic?
Also, is it more resource hungry on multiplayer?

If you plan to play single player on official server, it wouldn't work out very well. Official servers have very low rates in everything (harvesting, taming, leveling, etc.), but the intention for that was so that people can work together as a team rather than solo.

Unofficial on the other hand, can be friendly to solo players, but finding a good unofficial server is the hard part. Most of them are modded as well, and while mods are, in my opinion, the best part of what Ark has to offer, it might be hard for a new player to get into.

Single player gives you absolute control over how you want the gameplay be. You can pick your own mods, your own rates, and much more. It's always a good idea to bump up the rates by 2x or 3x for first timers (maybe even 5x). Breeding should have very high rates as they literally take days, and logging off single player doesn't follow the day timer unfortunately.

To answer your questions, official servers are definitely toxic. And it's usually more resource hungry in multiplayer due to more buildings. It might be better to play single player first just to get the hang of the game, then see if you can find a decent unofficial server.

Thanks for your reply :). I have played mobile ARK for 2 months (iPad Pro) and on my brothers X-Box for a month (Rag and SE). I have got the hang of it, and I know most dinos and their abilities. It’s just that I’m now new to PC (first gaming comp). Anyways, I’d also like to ask, what does toxic necessarily mean? Does everyone just kill everything or insult each other, etc?

I recommend you play on singleplayer if you plan to play anyways, then you won't loose everything you have ever farmed for if you get busy for 2 weeks or you go on a vacation, also you aren't forced to play when you are not in the mood for it on singleplayer.

Single player and multiplayer are the same. Neither is more taxing than the other on your computer, except as mentioned above, huge bases you might run into.

Toxic? It's an online multiplayer game. There are toxic people in ALL online mp games, ARK is no different. There are good people that want to have fun and help each other and there are bad people who's only mission is to ruin peoples fun.

The official servers are overcrowded and not really worth the effort. You also have the fact in mp that if you don't play for a week or two you can lose everything you have gained.

Single player can be fun, coop with a real life friend is what is really great. If you like pvp you could probably find a server that would suit your tastes, but pvp can be harsh. All of your stuff can be destroyed while you are offline, thus changing it from player vs player to player vs empty base...

The word "toxic" generally means negativity or anti-fun activities. In this case, PvP official servers doesn't just have players constantly raiding each other, but also overnight and abuse bugs and exploits to their advantage. In PvE servers, players can "pillar spam" which means placing pillars everywhere to prevent building for players. And of course, insults are everywhere, and there's nothing to prevent that...not even a mute button.

Unofficial servers can have server admins to prevent toxicity, and they also sometimes include offline raid protection. So it's definitely more favorable for solo players to play on unofficial PvP, just be prepared that most of the servers running with mods (which again isn't necessarily a bad thing).

All of my hours except a few are singleplayer. Maybe that speaks for itself, maybe it doesn't. Either way I am having a blast with ARK.

Also if you play on official multiplayer you never know when the servers might close down.

That is much more of a concern on unofficial servers.

The biggest problem i had on official was the "migrations" the lowest population servers close down. Its in my opinion the way the devs force folks to play on high to mid pop servers. So if you want to have friendly enviornments without the risk of that id say either stay single player or try out unofficial servers. I host a pvp cluster if anybody is interested you can find info here.

I love official. But ive had to restart every day almost on high population servers no matter how well i built my base turrets etc. Somebody would raid me with grenades c4 etc i got good at rebuilding fast. But i kept getting raided after awhile i couldnt handle it so i went to a low population server for a good bit and it was nice had tons of rexes a nice base and a few friends till WAM! server migration... They shut down the official cluster i was on all my progress wyverns etc were gone afterwards... Once that happened i started a cluster of my own folks can join and hang out pvp till your hearts satisfied etc. Hope you guys consider it

Also ive been hosting this cluster for almost 2 years with 0 plans to close it. I want to grow it as folks join and become dedicated.

Wow, great for you :). I’m quite interested in your server. About your server, how many people play on it? And is it a friendly environment? Also, what a cluster server? Sorry for my noob questions ;-;

I am sure others have stated this (sorry didn't read all the replies) just in case they didn't, do not start your PC ARK adventures on Official servers, it is the absolute worst experience you can have when you are still learning the game, and i know you have experience on the mobile and console versions, but just do yourself a huge favor, use battlemetrics and find a good unofficial server to begin with.

Or better yet just play for a week in SinglePlayer.

Best of luck, come back and let us know how things went, we love good stories here.

Thank you for your reply :). I was wondering, why does everyone advise against these official servers, I do like a challenge. If it won’t be too much trouble, could you tell me how to find a good unofficial server to play on after I finish a week of SP.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/346110/discussions/10/ This is the link to the ARK server forums, there is also another forum for players looking for tribes and servers, when i am looking for a new community to join, or i want to advertise my personal servers i go to those.

Asking here in the general forums will get you some replies but some of the older grognards who post in here might instruct you to stick to those two forums.

I have found most unofficial servers tend to be very open to helping out new players, and typically have a dedicated discord channel for the server.

The main reason why Official servers are advised against is that most have long standing traibes that have been on those servers for a really long time, they are bored and see new players on there servers as a way to entertain themselves. This happens on PvE servers also as you will be hard pressed to even find open land to build on. If i really wanted to play on a official PvE server i would make a mobile base either on a raft or on a Bronto/Smiley, but even that could be difficult as the max number of tames might be maxed out.

So in the end unofficial servers have nicer playerbase and are more actively moderated by the server owners. Battlemetrics is an easy way to find servers also, and it gives you some history of the server to.

Make sure to come back and tell us how your ARK story goes.

There are several ways to find a good unofficial server. You can use battlemetrics (just google Ark Servers), or look at the advertisement section on steam.

We have roughly 2 admins i am the main active one. We also have roughly 6 people currently active on the cluster who play every now and then 1 is on the way to joining and may be active once they receive game key. A cluster is a group of servers that you can join and then switch between em at will for example you can transfer from my ragnarok server to my aberration server and then back etc but we have 5 servers in the cluster.

Ragnarok
Extinction
Aberration
Valguero
The Center

It is also a very friendly enviornment and we have strict rules against camping and a banning policy against meshing untill the devs get it all sorted. We also have a strict proof of crime concept if you have a issue with somebody like they cheated or broke a rule you need a picture or video clip of the crime to speak of which will get them suspended or banned due to our rules and the punishment for which it was and the reason for why it occured example. Was it provoked or was it accidental. somebody may be camping the arena with their dino by accident for example because of a disconnection as camping will get them suspended. But our rules are not harsh they are for fair gameplay on the server.
However these rules only apply to ragnarok as it is the map we have spent the most effort making this way with arenas outposts etc for factions.

Right now its capped at 10 people per server but as we grow and folks help support the servers we plan to increase each to 100 people max per server or perhaps 50 max per server and open more up as time goes on. i sent you a friend request if you want to ask me questions feel free to. :)
