microsoft ark and steam ark

ok, so i bought ark on xbox and that version is play anywhere. so i downloaded it for free on my pc. it has a desktop icon and for some reason its in my steam library. now i do not own the steam version but i do want it for the mods. eco mods mostly but when i go to the steam store to buy it , it says i already own it? can i have both versions of ark on my pc installed ?

Since the Steam version of Ark seems to want to put all it's save information into it's install folder like a game from before the turn of the millenia, I'd guess it would be safe; but I'd back up said save data first..... and that is assuming you have room for two copies of Ark.

i have room for both versions. uninstalled the microsoft version that pops up on the steam library and it says i cant buy it . just install it. dont know what to do?

You do own the Steam version, you must have forgotten that you bought it before.

And yes, you can have them both installed because they are two different games.

no i only bought the microsoft version. why its in my steam library i couldnt tell you. however, i can download and add the mods to the microsoft version that is in my steam library but when i try to start a game it dashboards me and says i need the steam version of ark to use the mods.

What margalus said. That little mouse icon to the right of your name on your posts indicates you have the game (of the forum you are posting in). As far as I know, unless there is some magic with the Windows 10 version of Steam (I am still on 7), the MS version of Ark should not automatically appear in Steam. You could manually add a shortcut to it if you wanted, but nothing automatic.

Are you sure you had the MS version installed to begin with?

No, there is no magic. There is no way that purchasing the Microsoft version caused it to show up in Steam. The one and only way to get the Steam version is to purchase it on Steam. It is a completely separate version of the game. Steam and Microsoft version are not compatible and they are not recognized by each other.

No, you purchased the Steam version and forgot, that is 100% fact as Steam is showing that you purchased it. Go to your purchase history and you will see that you purchased it long ago and forgot about it.

Mods can only be used on the Steam version.

ok, lets say that i did buy it on steam and forgot about it. why, when i start the game up on steam and add the mod i want , does it dashboard me when i start the game and say i need the steam version of ark for the mods? im aware of the crossplay rules and the versions of the game.i went from windows vista to a windows 10 cyberpower battle box top of the line. i know , huge difference.

im beginning to think there is conflicting software somewhere or a setting i am missing. to be honest the last time i used steam was when counterstrike came out. so steam has changed quite a bit since then. iceworld 2 snipers.

I don't know what you mean by "dashboard you" there is no dashboard in Steam. If you want to install mods you have to install the Steam version thru Steam.

i understand that about buying the steam version on steam to use the mods. ok so, checked my purchases now that i know where and how to do that. i did buy it on steam. however , same issue. i load the game up and add the mod, start the game and it sends me to the desktop and says i need the steam version when i clearly have it .
