For me i play this game more than any other i have in my library.
You can play the game in single player if you choose to, you have absolute control in single player...such as how much materials you can harvest or how long a it should take to tame a dino. There are official servers, but I honestly do not recommend them as they are often toxic and can really impact your schedule. There are plenty of unofficial servers (these servers are created by players themselves, not the official company), and they can adjust rates and such to improve quality of life.
Another great thing about Ark is that it has a massive modding community. There are so many mods you can try out, it's what makes the game very replayable. I personally think a lot of people can enjoy this game, but it's a very high learning curve game and setting up the right rates or finding an unofficial server can be a frustrating experience as well. But we're happy to help you get started if you have any further questions.
It varies, ya know?
In my opinion, Ark is good if you can run your own servers, or can find people willing to accept you on their private servers, or like soloing. Because then the game can be modified however you wish.
I don't think the game is good at all using official rules. For reasons such as this: https://www.dododex.com/taming/therizinosaurus/150
To my shame, I've watched a stump for days as an Everquest cleric, to obtain a necessary object. But my addiction to Everquest made me resolved to never do such things ever again, for fun.
Because it's not fun to watch stumps for days or even spend hours taming a dino.
Which you must do, even if all you want to do is build.
Your abilities are nothing compared to a tamed dino. And so you must tame them to progress.
But nevertheless, Ark is fun for me, playing with friends, because we run our own servers, and so are able to modify taming times down to a point where it doesn't make my eye twitch caused by my addiction to Everquest. Or any other parameter that is not fun.
And being able to use the S+ mod, which helps a lot to fix the building issues, which are many despite it. Like the Ark devs seem to not know that WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) is a really big deal in programming.
Because very often what you see as a ghosted image before placing an object is not what you get.
