Is chitin armor good enough for the cold in the snow biome?

I have some chitin armor but nothing else. Is chitin armor enough for the snow biome?

You can pop in and out of the cold with a dino and harvest enough for for the armour you really need. But no, you need fur armor for the cold zones.

For me, I was on a raft with 3 standing torches around me with a buddy also holding a torch. We managed to diminish the cold until we got off the raft to collect organic polymer from penguins.

I think if you have 2 or 3 friends, you can all survive if you all hold torches (with backups just in case) and all pack together to stay warm. However, this isn't the best strategy as you wouldn't be able to attack anything unless you had some really good tames to help, which even then isn't the best option, but could work.

Just go with fur. If you can't get it at all, build a stone box on your raft and a ton of standing torches to keep warm, along with a campfire, preserving box and raw meat. Always have torches attached to the saddles on your tames you bring, and make sure you have a few tribe members to keep each other warm with torches. This way might be expensive, but so is fur armour. I personally only managed to get one fur hat because the only way of getting the materials was cutting hair.

It can work, but fur is still the best for cold areas. Though you could find an otter around rivers, and level both it's melee and your fortitude. I usually aim for at least the mid twenties. Bears also give a small insulation buff, and are fast, strong mounts in general.

You don't need to go into the snow to get pelt either by the way, you can hunt megaloceros and bears in the redwoods, or hang around the outskirts of the snow biome during the day for mammoths, wolves, and megatheriums.

Snow biomes require fur, fireplaces, and curry, although two out of three will be fine in most circumstances. It's not a good place to show up in ghillie or combat armors like chitin or flak without extremely high fortitude.

Nope. That's a waste. Raid beaver dams, use keratin, or get achatinas.
Chitin armor is second only to (maybe) tek armor.
Flak and riot gear can take a hike.

There is a hypothermic and hyperthermic value on each armour type/piece. Look for higher hypothermic values when seeking cold protection. I believe chitin is even worse than simple leather armour for protection against the cold, but I could be wrong about that. I'm sure we'll find out soon...

Chitin is a basic combat armor, like Flak or Riot. They offer good physical protection, but trash temperature regulation. If you need cold weather gear AND good physical protection, you go fur or go home nearly dead from frostbite.
