So...um...how do I save?
Ok, brand new to this game, quite liking it so far, but some damn dino came along and killed me after I'd built up some resources. I lost everything and respawned, albeit my level was intact. Is there a way to actually save progress/resources/positions as you go or...what?
Cheers.

nope, just go get your corpse that will have a giant green pillar of light going up into the sky to mark it and get your stuff back, assuming said dino doesnt kill you again. Assuming you are single player or non dedicated, when you log out the game saves the current state of your world until you start it up again, if you are on a dedicated server well the world keeps going when you are not there

3 tips for new players.

- Make a sleeping bag or bed ASAP so you can respawn without losing progress.
- Do not carry everything on you. Make a storage box and accumulate there. Minimise losses.
- Duplicate weapons/armor in storage so if you die you can rearm and get your gear back.

Once prepared, death should be a temporary inconveience. Losing stuff or worse, progress, is just wasted grind. :)
i also dont recommend aberation for new players if you were thining about that, im a returning player and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that map is unforgivable if you are anywhere at all out of the loop

Thank you everyone. I did wonder what the green columns were. But I have only died once?

So, I have done a few bits and bobs now (did a campfire and built a wee thatch hut), and I think I understand that the game saves your level and resources as you go (including exiting the game), but if you die you have to retrieve the latter yourself, kind of like with NMS.

My only issue with the sleeping bag as a save point is it needs like 30 hides and that's a bit of a grind and risks death with every small dino fight you have.

Also, any base/hut whatever you've made - if you exit the game, is that saved/marked? When I return will it put me back to the same place or do I need to find my hut again?

Thanks.

if you are on single plyaer, yes
if you are on a server, maybe, reason being other people exist in that world and they (or wild dinos) can destroy it if they want

Just run around until you find Doddo's, easy to kill and won't take too long to get hides. + depends on if you use an axe or a pickaxe one will grant you more hide while the other will grant you more meat.

quick note
sleeping backs are a one time use for respawns
beds have infintie uses with a cd timer between each use

Ah, I'd failed to distinguish between the two, thanks for that heads up.

I am single player, yes. Was never interested in the online part. Thanks.

When i start out on a map, especialy the more difficult ones, i dont really set roots till i have gained a few levels and get bolas unlocked. Once i can deal with any jump attacks from various small predators and tame a trike i find a place to settle down and get multiple beds and boxes down asap, as well as a mortar and pestle to get narcotics going. After that its survive and build.

i probably should of distinguished between pvp and pve, pve people cant touch your stuff or kill you (devs put in many patches to stop trolls in pve, which made it worse for the non trolls in pve) unoffcial servers are where its at, especially if you have friends, main reason i say this is resources take a bit to respawn, and that respawn timer for them stops ticking when you close out, but on the other hand, if you breed dinos in single player, the baby dino wont starve to death when you pause or close the game in single player, where as in multi you have about 10 seconds to feed it on hatching before it starves to death (not joking, watched one hatch, went to name it jack, it died)

wanna know what life was like before bolas, a freaking nightmare starting out (granted, this was before dinos learned they could go around the rock to the climbable spot, so give and take)

there is no player saving. Think minecraft. when you die you lose all ur stuff unless you claim ur body before it expires.
